Does my Tele have a problem?
« on: February 17, 2008, 10:42:59 PM »
Hello all,

Been wondering for a hle ow if my tele has a problem. I Love playing it but there are some nicks on the back of the neck that are worrying me - they are worryinh me as I don't know if they are a problem or not!! Can someone give me some reassurance that all is okay (or if not what I need to do to fix it!).

Basically the neck has some chips in the lacquer and it looks as though the actual wood of the neck will be exposed soon.

Photos of the guitar are attached - would be very grateful to my fellow forum members if they have any guitars with a similar condition (or if they know what I need to do!).

Cheers,

Ian
PS The guitar has been around since the earlyish to mid seventies (trying to get it dated at the mo)

It looks like someone was using a screw capo on it.  If they don't bother you I wouldn't worry about it.  Some of my strat necks have the lacquer completely worn off!

Would you consider taking all the lacquer off the back of the neck and using Tru-oil?

I wouldn't worry too much. My Strat has a few dings, albeit not to that extent but it has never caused me any problems.

Give a gentle sand with some very fine sandpaper or one of those purple 3M things you can get in B&Q - and then clean it with some wood polish - it'll even things out a bit.

Yeah, what they sid man.. If it doesn't affect your playing then it's not a problem.

If it does, sand it with some really fine wet & dry sandpaper all over and even it out a bit..

If you realllly hate them, sand all the lacquer off the back of the neck and put some oil on the wood, or refinish it with lacquer again.

Cheers for the answers all. Very helpful. I will probably leave it as it is - I think it adds a bit to the character of the guitar!

Thanks again,

Ian.
