Mules help
« on: November 28, 2009, 02:53:19 PM »
I bought a set of mules last year fitted to a  Gibson LP standard and I'm finding that the tone and high end is fantastic, but im lacking a low end push and drive. Don't get me wrong they are fantastic pups, but that extra push would make them perfect, does anyone have any suggestions?

Use them with a booster pedal?  Or tubescreamer?

I've tried that and it just doesn't make it juicy, I've tried it with various amps and the low end out put on the 6th and 5th strings  is lacking depth, its not the overall sound, it' s as if the pick ups arent set at the right height on the low strings, but thats not the problem.... tis bad times
Thanks for the suggestion though =)

If they're single screw pole, which I expect they are, try flipping the pickup round 180 degrees so the screws are closer to the neck than the bridge.

If that isnt enough, raise the screws.

I would suggest trying changing the capacitors on the tone controls
I changed my mules to oil and paper types (Vitamin Q) and it made a world of difference - even when the tone is full up
It seemed to thicken the tone and make it sound more "vintage" to my ears
The range of the tone controls was much improved as well

the tiny ceramic disc caps that Gibson seem to fit leave a lot to be desired

Mules are great, but they do require some help from the amp to get them really fat.  I found myself struggling with them when using lower gain settings.

I'm now using an Abraxas set that have a very similar tonality, but the bridge pickup has much more 'umph'.

checkout the video links in my signature to hear how the Abraxas set sounds, all those clips were recorded with those pickups loaded in my Les Paul.
