Padauk body bublinga neck (edony board) Tone?
« on: February 24, 2008, 11:35:28 PM »
Hello All

I am going to be making a guitar (my first) out the above woods as they are what I could get my hands on (body wood from craftwood shop just down the road from me for £27 and warmoth neck from friend unable to complete his first guitar making project due to kids on the way for £100)

I was wondering what peoples opinions of the tone you would get out of this combination? I have looked around on different sites and just ended up getting more confused than when I started. It's going to be a strat sort of construction, bolt on neck and 3 sc's

Most people seem to say the both the woods are quick bright (padauk quite oftern compared which maple). Though I have seem quite a few saying that padauk is very dark sounding.

Also which would effect so sound most the body or the neck, or is it roughly even?

I haven't included pick ups at all in the tone consideration yet as thats what I trying to work out.

paduak is bright like maple but can be more complex sounding  - its a nice brightness

bubinga is very dense and stiff and not easy to work with so take your time (you may have no choice on that - it dulls tools pretty fast).

i think you are going to get a liveley, punchy guitar out of this combo.  certainly on the bright side but sensible pickup choice will help with that

Thanks Wezv

I'm the neck is already made (warmoth) I'm not sure my woodworking skills would be up to carving my own neck.

Cheers

so says the pro  :)

it's the fretboard I'm be scared of, 22 perferct cut's I'm bound to completly mess up one.

They way I see it, just making the body, there are only 2 parts which have to be absolutly spot on to have a playable guitar, the neck pocket and the bridge alignment. the rest is comfort of playing (arm contores etc) and ascetics. This is I know overly simplified, but I hope you get my meaning.

next time I might make the neck back and buy a precut board (not sure if you can do that  but would be a good idea). That is if I don't kill anyone with my first attemp, just read that padauk is an irritant and sensitizer when sawes sanded etc. Did think to look at that before I bought the wood.

most woods can be irritating to someone so dont worry too much.. i have a problem with some woods but havnt had an issue with paduak.  other than emerging from the workshop orange after working with it but you will find that out soon enough.

you can buy preslotted boards from quite a lot of places  and they really do take a lot of the stress out.. stew-mac and lmii spring to mind

I know making necks isnt as easy as i make out but the first thing most people say after doing their first playable neck is that it was easier than they expected.. its one of them things that makes a lot more sense once you have tried it.  Making really nice necks is a bit harder though
