Playing Along At Home
« on: March 05, 2008, 03:18:11 PM »
Folks

Looking for some ideas - I want a simple set up for playing along to CD backing tracks at home - must stress that this is more for my amusement than anything else - looking for a (cheap) amp that has a CD input - mate has a Peavey Rage which seems to be OK and there are loads on evilBay, but any other ideas or suggestions? Yes, I know that these amps will not be tone monsters but this is for a bit of fun and to make practicing easier, not to develop my sound.

Thanks!!

Mike

I think the Roland Cubes have a CD input socket.  They're cheap and sound pretty good.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

They do indeed. They have onboard effects, which are ok, and are pretty reliable - being built like tanks.

The clean channel is outstanding for such an inexpensive amp.

The going price on ebay is around £60-70.

I usually use a regular CD player/DVD player cranked up.  Does it really need to go through your amp?

If you don't mind headphones, the various Korg Pandoras have a CD input.

Or you can connect a Pod or Guitar Port (etc) to a PC and play along with music on the hard drive via the Line 6 software.

(These are all things I intend to do on a regular basis but I'm too lazy to connect all those cables and stuff.)

I was wondering if there might be a pod type device with mp3 player capabilities, but a quick search hasn't turned anything up...maybe there is a gap in the market :)

My Toneport (or any of the models by Line 6) is soooooooooo useful.

Plug in, guitar, headphones, play.

And I don't have to hear my sister whining either.
"Would you like some lemon oil?"
"Oh, no thanks, I don't eat fruit."

tascam do a both cd and mp3 phrase trainers.  you can play along with the tracks of your choice, the machine will cancel out the original lead guitar (or at least try!) and they have built in amp sims and effects.  seem to be pretty well regarded and useful.  i should have one come birthday time! so if you want to wait a couple of weeks i should be able to tell you what it's like.

new vox amplugs have a Aux in i think. Supposed to sound nice too, and they're cheap, and they're a headphone amp obviously so you won't have to worry about volume.
LOVING the Mules!
