Beefier tone, rosewood neck vs mahogany body
« on: April 01, 2008, 06:27:40 PM »
So I'm contemplating my next guitar buy, and I have two contenders.

In the black corner, a 69 thinline tele. Semi hollow mahogany body, maple neck/freboard.

In the white corner, a standard alder tele with a rosewood neck (the classic 60s MIM player tele)

Now the sound in my head is a warm, beefy single coil sound- with a little help from a set of Piledrivers. Which of the above would give the best meaty tone? One factor is the thinline being able to cope with high output pickups, if they squeel like a biznatch then that makes the decision all that much easier.

For warmer tones, I would go with the alder/rosewood combo.  This is the sound from the 60's teles and to me is one of the best tones that tele's have.  I have a 62 tele, and it gives the tones that the Yardbirds BK set has.  Think of Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck and there you are.  I find that the Thinlines live up to their names and have a thinner sound, and with the maple neck, I think that it would be a bright guitar.

I disagree. I admit that maple/maple neck is brighter that rosewood, but that obvious. A hollow body in itself will already create a much wider tone, then having it be mahogany will have the illusion of a warm tone from the immense amount of midrange it has. So if you want a warmer tone I would recommend mahogany. But Because of the body shape of telecasters and the layout of the bridge and the relative distance between the pickup and the saddles there is naturally a brighter tone in teles. But maybe thats me. :D

I'd go for the alder-bodied, rosewood-boarded one.

I know teles have a naturally brighter tone, the plan is to have some warm woods and pickups to beef things up, but the tele-ness will help cut through.

I wasn't sure of the thinlines semi hollow build and how it affects tone, remember reading that it accentuates the highs and lows like an acoustic.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll save my pennies and try before I buy as always, just want a rough idea before I go annoy shop staff.
