pots and the like - help?
« on: April 22, 2008, 09:13:49 PM »
Hi all on the BKP forums,
Since my last post, ive really started to get into the whole modern progressive/alternate rock scene a la Muse, and my id like a new pickup change to better my strat's sound, which at the moment, with its lace sensors, is decent, but not what im after.
After contacting Tim, for a huge P90's esque sound, he suggested Trilogy Suites wth baseplates on all 3 single coil positions (I want to keep it at single coils, no humbuckers on my strat). This sounds just to my liking.
However, he also suggested getting 500K pots to further find what im looking for.
Problem is, im dreadful at electrics, and oblivious to what all these words (250k etc) mean. I own a Fender classic 70's series stratocaster. After looking on the Bare Knuckle shop, i see 5 items that seem to be the 500k pot im after. What are these "3/4 shaft CTS"'s and the like? Just a bit confused as to which to order.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for being so long winded and specific :S
Many thanks.

One more thing, when i do come to order the pots, is the quantity of one purchase the full set (ie. 3 pots - 1 volume 2 tone), or is it literally one pot, and i have to purchase 3 separate ones o get the set?
Cheers

Push-pull (and push-push) pots have built in switches, activated by pulling (or pushing) the volume/tone knob.  They're most commonly used for coil-splitting or series/parallel switching with humbuckers.  You probably wouldn't need one on a single-coil Strat, unless you want to add a switch to give you two additional selections - neck+bridge and all three pickups together.

3/4" shaft pots have extra-long threaded shafts for guitars with very thick tops - usually only used for Les Pauls.

Which leaves the basic 500K CTS pot with hardware.  £4.00 is the price for just one, I'm afraid.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

Yep, that should do it.  I think the switch, jack and capacitor on your Strat should be decent quality so they shouldn't need replacing.
