Abraxas or Mule neck pickup ?
« on: September 02, 2005, 04:44:28 PM »
I have two Les Pauls and the following Humbuckers.

Stormy Monday Neck
Mule Bridge
Emerald Set
Abraxas Bridge.

Do I get an Abraxas or Mule Neck pickup to complete a set. I like  having a selection to allow me to change combinations. Will the Mule be more versitile, more of an all rounder, or the Abraxas, which might be a bit hot in combination with the others.

Chris.
a good riff beats them every time!

For the Abraxas neck I've been doing an Alnico IV version of the Emerald...balanced output with extra sweetness.
For a complimentary alternative how about a Riff Raff?Very clear with a nice bite to it.

The Riff Raff sounds good Tim. Your advise has been spot on so far and I get to experience another Humbucker if I go for this option.

Is the Riff Raff an alnico V now, which will give that quirky in between tone when paired with an alnico IV.

Absolutley Chris which was part of my thinking too.Since the revoice of the Riff Raff I'm sooooooooo into this humbucker. It's more along the lines of an early '60s patent no. humbucker and provides an alternative to the patent applied for tone of The Mule. The overall tone is brighter with a more aggressive mid..........just think Angus in full flight 8) !!

Sold.

I'll make my next purchase a Riff Raff neck with the unpolished cover.

This may sound naff, but my playing has improved since buying BKPs because I'm listening more to the sound produced, and trying to wring as much tone out of them as I can.
