Pickups for a Gretsch 5120
« on: May 09, 2008, 07:11:19 PM »
My Dad, bless him, recently returtned from a holiday in las vegas. I asked him to get me a MXR EVH Flanger and a Wah Wah. He got me these but also came back with a Gretsch 5120 for me - very unexpected!

What I would like to know is if there are any bareknuckle equivalents of gretsch pickups - not sure if there are or not. Failing this what would be the best BKPs to put into the Gretsch? I'm guessing Stormy Modays but really don't know if they would fit into this guitar.

Cheers!
I think I hate being indecisive.

Ratrod's the Gretsch expert, but I'm guessing a set of TV Jones pickups would be your best bet.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

What Gretsch does with the TV Jones pickups is pretty awesome. Not that a set of BKP's wouldn't sound great but I certainly don't think it would be better.

I can't say a bad thing about TV Jones. If you want those, order them with the 'english mount' option along with pickup surrounds.

But how about a set of P90's?

See here how you can fit dog ear P90's in a 5120: http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9140&highlight=dog+ear

The sound will be similar to an early 50's Gibson L5: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qAeUVyIb5_8

Also have a look through the Gretschpages forum: http://www.gretschpages.com/forum/

Thanks for the advice all. Ratrod - love the idea of P90s. I will give it some serious thought!
