Right, so I planned to re-paint my Ibanez RG. Which had a chip and a few dents. After filling all those dents with wood fill.

I sprayed the first layer of black, then more black, more coats, etc.

It still had the marks of the sanding that I did on it. I didn't sand down to bare wood just dulled the paint. I didn't think I would have had to put sealer on it unless it was bare wood.

So, solutions?

Are you wet-sanding between coats? Ideally, it's best to do 2 or 3 coats, let it dry a couple of days then sand (carefully) with 400-grit wet-or-dry soaked in water and washing-up liquid.

Then wipe it clean, do a couple more coats and repeat the process as many times as you have patience for! As you build up the coats, your sanding lines will gradually fill with finish and disappear.

After you've built up at least 10-12 coats this way, let the final coat dry for at least 2 weeks, then wet-sand with 800-grit, then 1000, then 1200 etc - the finest you can get hold of (I have up to 2500). Then polish the whole thing with T-Cut.

The front is going to be any colour but blue. I'm contemplating whether to have some masked off design on it.

Philly, it's working! I just sanded it slightly there and re-added a coat, and the sanding is, imo, fading. Just need to do that half a dozen times.

As Phil said, work your way through the grades of wet-and-dry... you want it to be completely flat, so it's gonna take a lot of work, but it's worth it in the end :)

Plus any ideas of what to do for a design, if any, would be cool.

i think you should've sanded down to the original primer

and went for a diferent colour .. slime green? or pearl yellow .. :D

Black with a cool tribal dragon stencil in red. :D

I guess that's just my taste though, heh. If you want something cool on your axe, gotta be something personal to you.

black is one of the hardest to get perfect , it shows every little flaw

Very true, but it's also the easiest to do spot-repairs on, whereas with any other finish it's impossible to match the colour - who'd have thought there were so many shades of white?
