Is this a good idea?
« on: June 18, 2008, 11:04:11 AM »
I have a set of rebell yells in an all magonay LPC and cold sweats in an epipone les paul standard.

Was wondering whether the cold sweats would sound better in all mahog and the rebell yells would sound better with the maple cap.

There's a lot of crazy wiring and switching going on so i'm kinda loathed to spend the time changing it all round only to change it back again. :!:

Anyone got any thoughts or experiences? i know that Tim had a set of Cold sweats in his LPC which sounded awesome - although i did test them through a diezel ~(which i still lust after)

I would say the Rebel Yells would sound brighter than they do now if you swap them to the Epi.  Might be what you're after, might not?

How do they compare now, is one guitar noticeably brighter than the other or do they sound pretty similar?

I'm not sure, but I think the RY is a bit brighter than the CS, with a lot more upper-mids.  And the Epi is presumably acoustically brighter than the LPC.

So you might end up with quite a dark-sounding Custom and a bright-sounding Epi, as Dave said.

Well to be honest i'm not sure the rebell yells are best suited to the LPC all mahog.

The distortion is a tad dark and is missing a little bit of cut.  The problem is I dont want to sell them so its a bit of a juggling act to find another home for them and put something else in the LPC.

I think Ideally id like to put the Rebel yell in a superstrat - but I dont have one that accomodates two humbuckers - especially purple ones!

I guess I thought the cold sweats from the epi would sound massive in the LPC - ala john sykes. (although I am happy with them in the epi).

I guess the bottom line is i need more guitars!

Yes, as Twinfan once reminded me ( and was correct) - a set of pickups that can sound bright in a maple top Les Paul, can sound darker in an all mahogany guitar. In my case the pickups where different ( Stormy Mondays ) - but the all mahogany guitar they went into was a slim Gibson S.G. I mention this , because if you compare the body thickness / weight of the two, you would swear that the Les Paul would 'dampen' things down a lot more than a mere 'slip' of an S.G.

If you do decide to have a swap around and listen, ( which I recommend ) - take comfort in knowing that I had to do the same operation / comparison four times with my 335 copy ; - and that involved all that ' keyhole surgery' through the 'f' shaped body holes !

In the end each pickup ended up in the ideal guitar. With B.K.P. it really is worth the effort required to truly know which pickups are  best suited to what guitar for your own tastes.  After that you have the rest of your life to enjoy the end result.   :)

That's the problem with custom colours, isn't it?

I have some purple/black Crawlers but I'm going to sell the guitar they're in, so not sure what to do with them now.

To true; obviously they only work in a black or purple guitar - unless you want it to look like a refresher.

I asked Tim if I could send them back to have covers put on them, but somehow he convinced me to keep them the way they were :!:

I used to have a purple EB/MM Axis Sport, they'd have been perfect for that!
