welcome aboard, Virginian!what amp(s) are we talking about??

I'm currently running through an 80watt Crate solid state combo I've had since I was in high school. I plan on upgrading sometime this year after I get my Dean straight.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Okay, from what I've gathered so far, I'm better off with a calibrated set that mixing and matching. Ok, cool.

And the general consensus so far is that the VHII probably isn't what I'm looking for..I should go for something a little more substantial.

I have another V with Bill Lawrence XL100's in it. I like those pickups..to a point. The clean tones are bell-like and flawless. The XL100 is big on the treble, but the V I have it in is darker than my new V, so it doesn't overpower the frequency range, but it would probably be too much for my new guitar too handle. The bass isn't as thick as i'd like it to be, but I'm happy with the midrange and it's clarity is outstanding. It's just a bit sterile for me and am looking for something like the XL but with  more balls and character.

I saw another thread that likened the Painkiller to the XL100. I'm just worried about getting something that's TOO MUCH for this guitar....like I said, it's rather bright and I want to warm it up just a bit and thicken it a little more, but maintain it's "alive" nature. Something i can play "Raining Blood" with but then turn around and play "Rock and Roll All Nite" with.

welll... the lawrence and the painkiller can be compared on treble and brightness level and clarity through drive, but they are very different
the painkiller definitely has more output, more bass and a ton of mids, where the lawrence is scooped

the miracle man has that weird characteristic of the lawrence: it sounds BRIGHT on the first strings and DARK on the lower strings
the leads sound very sharp and clear (i can't agree about it sounding smooth like most people say here) and it has a ton more bass and output than the lawrence, but they do have similar mids

i think the cold sweat would be a closer replacement with more meat, but i can't be affirmative about this one, as i didn't play it yet (i have only the neck version)

 indeed! not sure i'd sign that, but i'd be interested in another ceramic humbucker in the range - maybe something totally wild - tim's imagination run riot, who knows?!

@ACK! - Yes, I think you'd prefer something more substantial than a VH2, I say Holydiver, I'm sure you'll find something to suit anyhow!

@Will - I love most Vs, still theres some I'm not sure about... But most things 6 stringed and V shaped cause me to lose logical thought indeed!

hi hi hi! ;) yes, i have seen it. shes quite tempting, but i have a similar hamer. i have a feeling though that your edwards will be quite a lot better quality. nevertheless i have managed to avoid temptation so far.

From all I' ve read, I'm leaning towards either the Holy Diver or the Painkiller.

Would the Cold Sweat be a good match in the neck or should I go calibrated?

your call - either option will give you a cool set.
