Hey all,
I'm new to the forums and new to Bare Knuckle pickups but I hear amazing things about them so I want to get a Pair in my les paul. I talked to Tim and he suggested either a set of Mules or Rebel Yell. I'm leaning more towards the Rebel Yell after listening to the sound clips on the forums but am still unsure. Does anyone have any particular opinions to the Rebel Yell in a les paul?

I've had one in my Les Paul for a bit, its a great pickup though not my kinda thing any more. It's really good for that typical big bright 80s rock sort of tone. Mines for sale on ebay if youre interested (and in the UK) :)

Sorry I'm located in the states, can the Rebel Yell dish out any vintage tones as well? or is it tonally restricted to that 80s sound. I want a pickup that that can go from the 60/70s to 80s as well. Any recommendations?

I'd say it can do the other things, but it isnt as versatile as the Mules (which I also have). Does have a strong midrange and is quite bright. Compared to the mules its a more agressive, tight sound, whilst the Mules sound a bit warmer and "softer" if that makes any sense. With a boost, I think the Mules can do anything.

This is a really old clip but it shows the versatility of the Mules quite well. The distorted rhythm bits are all bridge mule (unboosted), leads and clean are neck

I have a set of Rebs in my LP Standard and Mules in my Custom-the rebs are my #1's for all around stuff(my own stuff...)the mules have more bite to me...If I was playing in a cover band and it was"classic rock", I would not hesitate to play the rebs(or the mules, but regarding your question..)-one of my favorite players is Jeff Carlisi(vintage 38 Special...)with the rebs and my trusty fulltone fulldrive, I am there
-skynyrd, Zepplin,Aero, Randy, Allmans, Govt Mule,etc...big Les Paul tone!!what amp/amps wil you be playing thru??
this morning, I did an A/B between the two-played "All Right Now"...the mule was dead on for that raw tone...the Reb was in a close 2(smoother..not as raw in my setup)however, the reb is rawer thru an open back cab..so many variables-but the reb is an allrounder..not a 1 trick pony

Right now I'm playing though a simple fender practice amp, a frontman 25R. I'm running my guitar through a vox tonelab LE for effects and it's amazing pedal board. I plan on bumping up to a Marshall vintage modern 2266C tube amp when I get the funds. How deep in the south are you shaman? because I live in North Carolina. But anyways, I think I'm leaning towards the Rebel Yell for now, it sounds like they'd be an awesome pick. But one question, how articulate are they? I like to have a bridge pickup that really catches pick technique. Also does anyone have any experiences with the Emeralds, can anyone give me any insight on those? How do they compare to the Rebel Yell?

regarding articulate, every knuck I have is very dynamic sounding, BUT....I play thru Mesa Boogie MArk series amps-known for tightness and articulation...Ihave VHII, Mules, RY,MM(strat)-the Mule has more bite, but acc. to tom in earlier post it is different for his setup(once again, so many variables involved!!-my setup is geared towards articulation..I want my picking to be heard, but almost in a Paul Gilbert type of tone...hence,with an OCD pedal in the chain, I can bring out that edginess...we are talking "click-click-click'...) you might not be talking about that type of articulation in regards to classic tones...
-pinch harmonics are abreeze with either-hopefully others will chime in b/c my Custom has 11's and it is always tuned 1/2 step low, so my axes are different for sure-I would not sell EITHER PUP-I have the Mule when I want a vintage tone..RY for vintage hot(ahhh..clean tones..I like the RY bridge better than the Mule in my setup...)cant forgot those cleans!!!

btw, welcome aboard, and buy more guitars so you can have both!!!!!!!!!

Hi there Kid!...! I have the RYs on a Les Paul too...and they are amazing pickups, versatile indeed....! 4 way conductor using the tone knobs as push-pull, they give you "The sound" to match the Marshall you are after ....excellent tone!. We had the Emeralds also on a Les Paul and they were great, more suitable for an straight foward rock, well balanced , amazing tone also. Like Shaman said more guitars is your best option, all those BKPs pair with the right guitar will give you different high quality tones. There is in Dallas, North Carolina a guy that modified Marshall amps for years and now makes his own, Scott Splawn. It will be worth to pay him a visit at his shop, but first get the RYs!

Shaman its weird that you think the Mules have more bite, I'd say the opposite in my case.

I just made you a quick comparison clip of the bridge Mule and bridge RY. It isnt an amazing quality one because I dont have a mic stand and I'm plugging straight into my stock onboard sound, but you can hear a slight difference.

yes, weird!but they do, indeed in my case-could be the different guitars-Mules are in a 91 LP Custom/rebs in an 03 Standard-definite weight difference in these guitars, and the Custom has ebony board/other is rosewood
i have never played both pups in the same guitar..that would be a great comparison, but it aint happenin'!the rebs arent ever coming out of my wino red Standard!

My RY is in an all mahogany LP, the Mules are in an alder/mahogany one. So I guess in theory the RY one should be a bit warmer because of the wood but it isnt anyway :P It'll be getting a bridge MQ to match the neck one soon anyway, I cant wait :D

I actually am going for that Paul Gilbert-ish tone. I want my picking to be heard , I really dig that sound and Gilbert is one of my guitar heroes. His his tone is amazing. We'll I think I'm going to go with the Rebel Yell, thanks for all the advice guys, it really helped me make a decision. As for getting more guitars, I do have a les paul standard with burstbuckers, that I am now considering getting a pair of Mules for. And I want to pick up this honeyburst Edwards MIJ les paul, maybe put some bare knuckles in it. But that would further delay my amp fund so those things might have to wait. Thanks for the advice guys, I really do appreciate it, you guys are really helpful and knowledgeable.

sweet....the burstbuckers must go!!that is what I replaced with the rebels and DAMN!!!!it really blew the bb's out of the water..the top end is smoother-the bb's got a little ice picky to me-one thing ios for sure, if the rebs dont cut it, get some mules..black dogs..emeralds...you can resale these babies no prob(just pm me!!)
keep us up to date(ps..the ocd pedal is a great paul g tool...it gets me there-gives it a little clicky ity click!)
