Picked up a baritone 7 - which pickup for maximum chug?
« on: July 04, 2008, 04:37:08 PM »
I ditched my Ibby endorser special, didn't dig the standard scale or the trem.. and picked up an Ibanez 2077XL on a complete whim because the price was incredibly low and it was for some reason in Canada. I've wanted one for awhile so hey why not.

Its a 27" scale 7 string, pro edge double locking trem, basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard.

My ideal sound is mahogany body/mahogany neck/ebony board guitars with Seymour Duncan Blackouts. The Nailbomb was really good, but I want to try something a bit different. Something that has a really thick sound that could make this basswood body chug, and has more dynamics than the Blackouts do (being EMG copies) but less than the Nailbomb so I get a little bit more of an active flavor.

I'm looking for new bridge & neck pickups. Miracle Men? or Painkillers? or ceramic Nailbombs?
It'll be tuned to Bb standard and I play my own special brand of metal http://www.soundclick.com/temps/

Sorry in advance for the lack of useful advice, but I just listened to some songs on your soundclick. I love it, even though it's heaps different to what I normally listen to :D

My gut feeling says Warpig in the bridge, either ceramic or alnico depending on what you prefer. More output and more compressed than the Nailbomb with lots of bass to add some body to that basswood. Miracle Man would be logical considering the mention of Blackouts, but I think it would sound too bright in basswood.

hmm the Painkiller might lend some brightness to the guitar for sure. The clips though, I run a master EQ and multiband compressor to add a lot of bite to the guitars - in person, they are a bit darker than that. Why'd you recommend a painkiller?

So we meet again Cody :)   What kind of mid-range character are you looking for?

I tend towards the balanced, fat side. I play a Mesa Stiletto instead of a Recto, and I always gravitate towards really mid-heavy rounds because I'm the sole guitarist and really want a nice huge sound.
