Steve, didn't you find guitars in dumpsters every now and then? Itcan't get cheaper than that.

I started on a cheapo £100 Squier and I haven't given up yet either.

Maybe a second hand Pacifica, even the lowest range one were really good for the money. Like someone else said stuff like loot and even car boot sales aren't too bad. I got a Hohner goldtop copy for £20 once at a boot sale  :)

don't spend less than £200 on a guitar for a beginner. it will be RUBBISH and it won't inspire the kid to play, (s)he'll get fed up and quit, and it will be a waste of £100 that yu spent on a cr@ppy guitar. A beginner needs something they can really play and get to know.

:D This is a great theory but unfortunatley it`s B*ll*cks. i think the ratio of beginners is 1 in every 4 staying with it for anything beyond the first year. Most people in this day & age don`t have that kind of money to throw away. The problem is that most guitar students think playing will be a walk in the park only to find that it`s bloody hard work & takes dedication. & you can`t predict which kids wil click with it & which ones won`t !  go the cheap way if they show any signs of wanting to keep it up then you can buy more expensive gear later.

Now that my proxy problems are fixed I can post again

Just looking at the current edition of Guitarist (well I wanted to read the esprit ceview) and Isee the current special offer in Soho soundhouse is the Yamaga ERG 121 for 80 quid (well 79.99).

One of those and one of the little Danelectro amp the eStudio is under 20 quid and the Honeytone is between 20 and 32 (depending where you buy it). I paid under 25 for my sons honey tone.

I use my sons honeytone amp more than my AVT 50 or Blues Jr cos when you turn the gain up it's just so much fun :)

An advantage for his mother is they take headphones too ;)

You know you don't need it to be a package, you can get "cheap" amps even cheaper on e-bay, and Yamaha seem to get glowing reviews as far as budget axes go. Vintage are good budget guitars...just not budget enough in this case.

How about one of those little practice amps that look like cigarette packets. They're small enough to put in your pocket and I think TO posted a review a while back.

Not sure the cigarette packet idea is appropriate for the age but I think you can get them in different finishes.

shame that i'm not in the UK. i'd give 'er my practice marshall so the kid can use it.

I'm in the UK and you can have my Laney TF200 65w (I think) combo for cheap (if you come get it, since it'd be a pain to post!). :)  Where I live is so small that I haven't got space to keep it anywhere but the attic, so it's not much use to me :(.  It's a decent little amp: quiet enough for bedroom practice but loud enough for small gigs.

As for guitars ... I'd worry about getting something too cheap.  A really cheap guitar can sound awful and be tough to keep in tune, and this can be really discouraging when you've just got an instrument for the first time and it sounds like crud no matter how hard you try.  Try to get a guitarist friend to try out any potential guitars, if possible, in hopes of finding a cheap-but-decent one!  And it's definitely worth looking for decent second-hand stuff over less-decent new stuff.

i'd definately go for a used pacifica 112. my brother has one, and it really ain't half bad. (good sustain, overall tone, H/S/S versatility, good for anything and everything, solid alder too!!- no plywood bollucks!) i might change pickups and hardware...make it a project guitar actually. ( hope he doesnt mind   i'm sorry about my last post, i was kinda in a strop cuz i'd been playing my friend's unknown brand guitar that he picked up for £80 and it was so indescribably rubbish it wouldnt even stay in tune while i was playing it. that;s gotta be enough to drive anyone insane!

Yamaha Pacificas all the way, I have a Yamaha RGX121S that I started out on as my first electric (essentially a pacifica with two humbuckers, singlecoil in the middle and solid colour body) and it kicks ass.

Loads of people love pacificas, well known awesome guitar for very low price.

If you have a local Cash Converters, try there. I went in the local one looking for a job today, they had some really cheap guitars that looked like they could be ok, about £70 each!
