New neck and body painting questions.
« on: August 08, 2008, 07:21:08 PM »
I've got this old Antoria Telecaster from the mid 70's It used to belong to my brother but he gave it to me when I was a youngun (70's Deluxe twin bucker style) It's been through a lot with me, Many gigs at the Marquee, tours around europe. It's worth nowt but it means a lot.

It's been neglected to be honest, the fretboard is cracking away from the neck the frets are so worn as to be almost non existent in places. Which is why It ended up being the guitar I did my 1 open tuned slide solo on at gigs.

Ok I know i'm heading into 'I've had this broom for 40 years and it's only had 5 shafts and 6 heads' terretory here but I Want to paint it black and put a new neck on it without breaking the bank. I think I've found a neck on Ebay 21 fret strat style as per the original I'm just checking the scale lenght with the buyer he's got a bunch of them listed as 13.5 which I assume is a mistake as there aint gonna be a market for 27" strat necks....

QUESTIONS? : :D
Pocket is 56mm Fender standard (even though it's a copy) Do I have to worry about the thickness of the neck too? Is the bottom profile a standard thing or does it change?

The body is being sanded at the moment as it's bare wood with Varnish at the moment.
What is the best kind of paint use and what should I put on top of that for durability.

If all this works out I'm going to put a set of Humbucker sized P90's on. As a halfway house between bucker and Fender Twang, the Original Wide ranger copies sounded like that anyway..

Thanks for reading a commenting on my rambles.

Enjoy the aging pick of me at the Marquee in 89 playing the very guitar.

nice looking guitar,

the thickenss of necks can vary but the main issue is finding one that fits into the pocket so as long as it fits the thickness issue can be dealt with when you know what issue you have.. too thin and you can shim the neck... too thick and you an either deepen the pocket or sand down the heel.  generally they are close enogh that neck pocket shims gets you in the right place

scale length is measured by doubling the distance between the nut and 12th fret so check yours is 25.5" before ordering any replacements

paint depends on loads of issues like equipment, skill and technique but i would recommend these if you want to use cans.  They are not cheap but they cover well and its proper nitro!!

halfords paints work ok but need to be sprayed with no more than 3 coats a day and given plenty of time to harden as they stay soft for ages... mostly thinners to be honest wheras the MGT paints are much thicker with actual paint

if you have spray equipment you have more options
