Quick Request:
« on: August 18, 2008, 08:36:48 PM »
Can someone order chrome pups without polepieces so that I can see what they look like?

Cheers  :P

Anyway, guitar as it is now:

Getting either Chrome with or without polepieces, anyone got any idea how it would look without?

Black without Polepieces (as there are no none polepiece chrome ones as of yet):

Horizon with Polepieces:

I'm going for either a Nailbomb or a Warpig in the bridge, and a Cold Sweat in the neck.

Reasons being, I'm after, a dark tone, as my amp and guitar are very bright, and I want a thick, chordy, chunky, deep, dark, tone for the bridge. And a smooth, crisp, tone for the neck.

I'm after both thick metal tones and super smooth jazzy tones, and will be using coil splits. So, as the Warpig and Nailbomb are the darker pickups of the hot range of BKPs, which do you think would be better?

And also, Ceramic or Alnico? I want something tight, but not excessively tight. It needs to have the thick resonance that super tight pickups don't have in my experience.

Guitar: ESP Horizon NT-II
Construction: Neck Thru
Body wings: Mahogany - Maple top
Neck: 3 piece maple

Amp: Engl Screamer.

BKPs are plenty tight with alnico magnets. Ceramics are for the ultra tight. Your description for the bridge sounds much a Crawler to me, but I might be biased.

Hadn't even thought of a Crawler, it has similar output to the Nailbomb, how does it compare?

Not considering HDs?  I thought they were (perhaps) darker than NBs.

I think chrome - with polepieces - would look great.

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I was thinking of HDs actually, but was wondering if they would be a little too vintagey?

Most of the stuff I play is very high gain and very modern.

On that basis, I think the Crawlers would be too vintagey for you too.  They're like super-beefy PAFs, although that's an over-simplification.

I haven't tried either the HDs or NBs myself, I'm afraid, but I'd guess NBs are the most modern-sounding of that lot.

Is the ceramic nailbomb more or less bassy? I want both Darkness and clarity, I assume ceramic means tighter, but is it darker?

Or should I just stop with all this and go for a Warpig, it seems to have all I want, ceramic is slightly tighter again, so maybe that's what I want?

I'm not a big fan of buzzsaw highs either, I prefer a very round smooth tone.

I would expect the C-bomb to be both tighter and somewhat brighter/harsher/more piercing than the alnico version, assuming everything apart from the magnet is the same.

I'll scratch my recommendation for the Crawler then. It's every you said, but modern sounding it ain't. Also, I really think based on your description that you're better off with an alnico powered humbucker. Holy Diver would be my choice for what you're describing.
