Between Black Dog and Rebel Yell bridge...
« on: September 01, 2008, 12:16:03 AM »
...which one has the most top end / best presence? I'm mainly thinking distorted tones..

I understand both will do modern hard rock pretty well, I just need suggestion about which one would help me cut through better / have the best definition while playing some heavy riff.

Thank You

Rebel Yell if you're looking for cut, I found the Black Dog dark (especially in the bass end)

Rebel Yell gives great tones, but you need to be careful with proximity to the strings. Too close and it muddies up.

The BlackDog is better up close, which is also when it cuts better.

I like them both equally. Depends also on the type of guitar you're looking at.

I can't comment on the Rebel Yell but I love the Black Dog personally I dont find it overly dark; for a point of reference it nails the opening tone to whole lotta love straight out of the box just turn the gain up high I also found that this pickup works better closer to the strings

GUitar is a Les Paul r4 Oxblood.

It has humbuckers in it and the bridge one is closer to the bridge than what you normally see in les pauls.

This give me great cleans, and cut while playing distorted with the stock burstbucker 3, but at the same time the pickup in this position lacks a bit of balls.

So I'm looking for something to complement this, keeping the same brightness, but adding mid-low frequencies with great definition.

Height is not a problem, I'd be putting a mule in the neck so the rebel yell would not be too high to match the output while the black dog would be closer to the strings.

Awesome guitar, I love the wraparound bridge!  :D  I used to have a very similar Edwards LP.

For the pickups, I would personally choose the BD bridge over the RY in that guitar.  It has the low mids you mentioned but doesn't lack clarity.

The RY has plenty of presence and punch, but it's a lot leaner in the bass and low mids.  I think it might be too bright, even a bit harsh.

I've never tried a Burstbucker 3 so I don't know how it compares.

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

thiswill not help, but I have owned a dc-5-killer amp!!you will be happy with either pup-you have the 5 band geq, correct?I have played both a RY and a BD thru my mesa's(MK IIC+ amps), and I liked em both!very close-little more top end with the ry....but I a-b'd em the other night and they were very similar-wouldnt be able to tell the diff. when the drummer comes in!you can really do some tone shaping with the dc's geq..I will add that the ry calibrated set is sweet-I own a Mule set as well and ,if I were to go with the ry, I would get a cal. set-it sings just like the Mule and it matches the bridge perfectly(I also really liked the BD neck.....sounded just like my RY neck..)
...like I said, no help here!!!!!!!!!

It's really a difficult decision. But I guess I'll end up getting the Rebel Yell bridge..

I can always roll off some extra brightness with the tone pot, and it seem more in line with what I do. Cleans sound excellent as well, and it seems that it has enough chunk due to the hotter output..

Now since the RY neck seem close to the Mule neck do you think it's wise to get the RY matched set?

How do you compare the two pickups?

I's important to me to have a nice clean in the middle position, with "snap" and "bloom", if you know what I mean..

my mark II's are bright amps-I just run the presence on about 2 and use the eq and my rebs sound incredible-snap and bloom are there with the cleans-I really think the Mule and Reb neck are very close-I cant tell the difference-they dont get muddy, they sound huge and balanced, they really sing/sustain for days a la W Haynes...great in between tones-I play a lot of clean stuff..a lot of hybrid pickin'...my rebs are sweet-plenty of snap(my strat with M Milk pups sometimes gets lonely...)..bottom line, the rebs are great all arounders-everyone who hears my guitar compliments the tone-always asked about the pups-I am sure the same would apply to the BD's-I asked Tim one time about approx. J CAntrell's tone and he immediately replied with the BD's-sort of in that JB range of Duncans
-I wouldnt think twice about the calibrated set-you get the tone and they are prob. closer in volume(hence "calibrated", I suppose..)
...yknow, there is also this real killer bridge pup called the MULE.....ahh..decisions...!
