Bridge pup for a Fender Jag-Stang
« on: August 28, 2008, 09:31:37 PM »
Hi guys, I don't know how many of you have had experience with a Fender Jag-Stang, but I need some advice.
The problems with the guitar are well documented, and in a nutshell, for some reason it is a very bassy, wooly sounding guitar, really struggle to get some high end bite out of it.
Anyway, I love the guitar itself, the neck is the most comfortable I have ever played, but having had it for 10 years I rarely play it any more because of the aforementioned problem.
It currently has a Seymour Duncan SH-5 (Duncan Custom) in it, which is marginally better than the stock.

So what I am looking for is a bridge pickup that is bright and can turn this guitar from a wooly thing into something I can use more regularly.
I play more modern rock in my I guess - like Alexisonfire, Funeral for a Friend, to Tool.

Thanks, Thom.

I would say a Rebel Yell or a Riff Raff would be worth a look.  RY if you want a high-ish output pickup, Riff Raff if you want something a bit more vintage  :)

Cool, cheers.  I have a set of RYs in an LP which I love the sound of.  Might try swapping it over to see how it goes, though I don't think of it as overly bright, so might be a bit dull still.

Gotcha.  A Riff Raff would be worth a try then I reckon.  They're certainly not dull!

doesn't the jagstang have quite a short scale neck with a basswood body? if so i can understand the wooly bass.

i have no idea what pickup to suggest, but trying the rebel yell will at least give tim a reference point. i like twinfans idea of a riff raff, but am not experienced enough myself to say for sure.

Yes it's exactly that - 24" scale and basswood body.
Thanks for the suggestions - I'll give the RY a go and then see from there :)
