Cold sweats bridge or neck
« on: September 03, 2008, 05:26:45 PM »
This is probably a stupid question, but I've just bought a pair of cold sweats from ebay and they have no stickers or markings on - is there a way to tell which is the bridge and which is the neck pickup? As an aside, other BKP's I've seen have "handwound in the uk" stamped on them, and these don't - is there a way to tell if they are genuine or not?
Thanks.

Give us pictures. I don't know when they started putting the "handwound in the UK" on the baseplate, or if they ever didn't. You probably should have checked that with Tim before buying, but hindsight is always 20/20. If you have an ohm-meter you can easilly check with is bridge and which is neck.

Thanks - I've attached a couple of pics; I'll know to check these things beforehand next time! I've no reason to suspect they aren't genuine I guess; came in a box with the paperwork etc (I've mailed BKP the details to see if they can help) - I was just suprised there was nothing stamped on them.
I've measured the DC resistance ( I think! I'm a bit of a klutz electronically) and both read about 8.1 - the paperwork suggests 8.3/14.1 should be right.
Thanks for the assistance.

They both read 8,1 and they don't have the logo stamped on the back... I think the guy sent you the wrong pickups with the right paperwork. :/

Cold Sweats are relatively new pickups in the BK range, so I would expect them to have at least the Bare Knuckle Pickup wording on the baseplate.  Also they should have the square shoulder covers (though in gold these may be OK).  Also, the braid doesn't look tight enought.  The real way is to check with Tim, though if you want to tke the cover off of one, then you could look for some tell tale signs too.  Did you pay by paypal - you can always try to get your money back.

Did BKPs ever not have engraved baseplates?  All mine have, but I only bought my first ones a little over 2 years ago.

I suspect he's sold you the pickups he replaced with his Cold Sweats.  :(

Hi,

Could be totally wrong but do some of the guitar techs get them slightly cheaper but without the markings on.  Thought I heard it somewhere though it could be absolute rubbish im talking.

Thanks again all - I've comfirmed with Tim that these aren't genuine. The seller was as surprised (and disappointed - he paid quite a bit for them) as me and has given me a full refund so top marks there. Probably a good cautionary tale though - I've learned to be very careful looking at bkp's on ebay!
