When i was looking for a humbucker like that tim said the Crawler was more vintage voiced, while the HD more modern. I took that as the HD having a bit more cut whereas the crawler is fat and thick. I went for the HD, and it's fat, but still cuts through.

I've only owned one of the two, but I've always been under the impression that the Crawler is like a super-powered PAF (more vintage voiced, as badgermark says) whereas the Holydiver has both feet in the hard rock/metal camp, without being a full-on mega-output screamer.

In my LP the Crawler was very fat with a real growl to the tone.  My impression is that the HD is also a fattie, with lots of low mids but, perhaps, a smoother, somewhat clearer tone(?)

Mm, ok...I'm still not completely convinced, but the Crawler might be indeed the more vintage sounding pickup of the two. Maybe the Crawler has slightly more mids also...

It's been said elsewhere that the HD has more low-mids and the Crawler has more mid-mids.  Make of that what you will.

Remember the Crawler is Geoff Whitehorn's signature model.  He's a blues-rock guy, nowhere near metal territory.

The Holy Diver has quite aggressive low mids (not Painkiller agressive though, just quite strong), I imagine the Crawler has sweet middle mids

My only experience of the Crawler was in one of Tim's LPs at LGS07, but I'd agree with that analysis.

The Crawler wasn't as powerful as the HD & seemed to have a more "rounded" top end.
