These two have something in common... beaten to hell strats. How is it they get so worn all over? I can understand in certain areas, but I just don't get how you get a guitar looking like SRVs #1 or Rory Gallaghers strat without purposefully distressing the finish. Is it something to do with climatic conditions or something?

I know Rory Gallagher had really acidic sweat which he blamed the finish on his guitar on. Also, most of those guitars were from the '60s, so after 20+ years of gigging round the world, in some of the dingiest clubs maybe carrying your equipment yourself, maybe the guitars could get so naturally worn?

Could be the finish - some guiatrs I've played the paint has been falling off! Especially 70s strats.

Nitro cellulose wears fairly quickly but Stevie Ray had so many guitars supplied by Fender that it's hard to see how they all got so worn out. Having said that you should see the state of HJMs RG550 neck.

I love "distressed" guitars, pics!!!

I'd love to have a beaten up LP, I gotta play a lot more...

I once saw Rory's Strat on a work bench in a guitar store on the late 1970's where it was being worked on. I was under instruction not to touch ( I can't see what harm I could have done!) and it was in a state even then. It was, I think, a 1962 Strat and so it was about 16 years old. Maybe it was Rory's sweat I don't know. I have a Strat that is now 29 years old and whilst it is not gigged so heavily, it is used but in nothing like the conditionof Rory's. sshhhhh, I  did play it too
