new pups for a Schecter
« on: November 04, 2008, 05:50:31 PM »
Hi guys - Im new in the forum :P

recently Ive come into a lot of cash & i was planning to buy a new guitar - then i thought id try to save a bit of cash & maybe do up a guitar instead. Ive looked around online. looked at a lot of seymore D's & Dimarzio's but to be honest they confused the hell out of me since like most players im really anal about my sound. - so a few friends of mine recommended I try out some BKP's namely the warpigs & Also that i speak to Tim in the forums if i run into trouble (Hi Tim :P *wave*). finding the right partner for the warpig is the main issue since my style of play varies A LOT (thanks to my band) so versatility is KEY to my playing.

we play lots of stuff ranging from metal - heavy rock - punk - funk - funk fusion - blues - soul - reggae to alternative stuff like Radiohead & jeff buckley etc etc.

my own sound is very 'vintage crunch'ish'  full bodied fat tone (& beautiful cleans, thanks to my PRS which is no longer with me) possibly almost Led Zepp style but not quite with enough backbone to kick into some S.O.A.D.

Im probably looking for a pretty balanced pup but anything with good mids & low end with a slight touch of highs would suit me perfectly.

I read somewhere that someone paired his Warpig with Cold Sweat which made a real versatile setup.

the guitar im installing the Pups in will be a Schecter Damien Ex

& if it helps then the bands that heavily inspire me the most are:

Opeth (the greatest melodic death metal band in the universe)
Dream Theater (J.P is god)
Angra (Ego Painted Gray - FTW)
Versailles-Philharmonic Quintet- (formerly Versailles) ~Japanese Visual Kei~
Jeff Loomis
(early) Symphony X
Clutch (southern style heavy rock at its best)
Protest The Hero

Im not in a hurry to get the pickups. but please dont keep me hanging :)

Hey! how ya doin?

just a little patience and you'll have plenty of replies.

one question... why are you so set on the warpig for the bridge? have you looked into other pickups or you're just assuming you want the warpig because you'll be playing metal?

the only real suggestion i can give you is to search in the players forums and find a few different pickups that you like. then, once you have it limited a bit the guys in here will help you figure out which one will suit you and your gear best.

Hi there, welcome!

For the sounds you've described, I'd venture a Warpig bridge might be a bit of an overkill for you, and a bit too compressed to give the big variety of sounds you're clearly after. Don't get me wrong, as a metal pickup, it just can't be beaten, but I'm not sure it offers quite the versatility you're looking for.

I'd recommend going for something a little less compressed, with a little bit less output for the bridge - a Nailbomb or Crawler might be a good place to start. I've used a Nailbomb previously, and it's a very versatile pickup indeed, with a decent ampunt of output and a very organic tone. I think you're probably on the right track with the Cold Sweat for the neck (going on what I've read - I've not used one), but you might also like to consider a Holy Diver neck. It's a very smooth, rounded, clear sound, which sounds lovely for cleans, and really sings for solos.

Hope all that helps.
Warpigs.

even a cold sweat set might be exactly what you're looking for.

the thing with the warpigs - is that i dont want to tone my guitar down so much that it loses that agressiveness. but I was thinking Nailbombs also,

you can get pretty aggressive with just about any of the pickups with the right amp settings.

My amp is a Peavy ValveKing 112 (I love this amp) & the woods on my guitar are Basswood body - Maple neck & a rosewood fingerboard

----

Just an update - Im checking out a few websites of local music stores & none of them seem to have Nailbombs, they only have the Cold Sweat in the bridge position. but i will either ring them up or go to the store itself to see if they can source them since they seem to be one of BKP's major distributors (Digital Village) - In Tottenham Court Road. its all stuff like EMGs, Low End Dimarzio's & the usual bunch of Seymore D's.

but im sure if i asked Rose Morris to source me a set im sure they'd be pretty willing to do it.

if worst comes to worst - i may have to get the Cold Sweat on bridge & a Seymore D '59 on neck (I hate mixing pups - dont bother asking me why because my OCD is good that way)

You can always order directly from Tim either on the web site or give them a call, if your local store doesn't have the ones you want. It's always worth giving Tim a call and getting his opinion anyway.

that's a sign!

I went through a lot of pups and some other BKP's and the cold sweat is my favorite, at least in my les paul
don't know how it would sound in basswood
if the price is fair, you could give it a try
but it sounds more like Pantera, Sykes, Zakk on Ozzy, old Dio...
more like hard rock and thrash metal than the bands you mentioned
but Chris Broderick was using it in Nevermore and Megadeth
it can do modern stuff really well

this week I was even thinking about ordering an overwound "hot sweat", darker, more bassy and middy for my other guitar (don't want a miracle man or painkiller)

my schecter still has its stock picks which tbh sounded ok before but now just sound so compressed & tinny for some reason. Im not too sure if its a problem with the pick ups or the fact that my guitar might be made out of 'cheap' basswood instead of the more high quality bass wood that ibanez uses to make some of their guitars. but it feels like the sound doesnt 'resonate' enough from the guitar. & the overall output of my EMG Hz pickups seem suprisingly low compared to the stock pickups on my PRS & Yamaha Pacifica Custom. - definitely a pup issue i think.

anyhoo's i gave digitalvillage a call & they said if they dont stock them they can order them in. But i want to check with Rose Morris first to see if they can do the same as they wont charge me to install them if i buy from them - Im gonna swap out my old pots too for some 500k ones otherwise R.M will charge me 20GBP or more for installation which kicks up the price unesssarily.

If Rose Morris are swapping your pickups, but will charge you to install pots. Why not buy direct from BKP (which offers a 14 day swap if neccesary) and if you are swapping your own pots, it is the hardest part of swapping pickups.

well i dont have a credit or debit card (yeah - Ive done shift work for 2 years, sometimes working more then 60hrs a week & my bank still wont give me a debit card LOL)

im gonna go to R.M tomorrow & ask them if they'd be willing to put in an order for me because with them so long as u buy parts from them - its free installation

if I had to go through Digital Village - Id get the pups but then id have to fork out 20GBP when i go to R.M to get them installed. R.M are great with aftersales support.

From the few clips that ive heard in the players section - Im very confident that the pups are exactly what i want

I have GREAT news, good news & some bad news first -

good news first: my pups are on order

GREAT news: Digital Village price matched them saving me 20GBP

Bad news: Rose Morris were complete A-holes & refused to help at all due to 'not-having-a-trade-channel-with-BKP' & some B.S about they'd have to create a new account with BKP & make some sorta client thing blah blah blah. I wasnt listening after that.... so really a big 'F**K OFF!' from R.M which is sad. which means that i will have to pay 20GBP to install the pups but EVERYTHING ELSE i want done on the guitar is free installation.

~P.S~

I just realised I forgot to tell the guy I wanted 'coverd' pups- I called D.V up & got the order changed from Open to Coverd so im not too sure they will be able to hold the 'price match' offer anymore.

but I we will see when they come in - so far ive just put down a deposit for the pups which is lucky as i can haggle a bit :P
