Help needed in selecting a replacement for Bill Lawrence XL-500
« on: November 13, 2008, 11:33:19 PM »
Hello!

I've been thinking about ordering a BKP to replace my current bridge pick-up Bill Lawrence L-500XL. The guitar is a Washburn N4 with an alder body and an ebony fretboard. The Bill Lawrence PU sounds too trebly and thin for my taste, it doesn't have enough warmth and richness to it. It's also a bit too much of a heavy pu for my taste.

The tone I'm looking for is a rich and full-bodied 80's hardrock sound with a bit moderness to, along the lines of EVH, Nuno Bettencourt etc.. I also like to play much Megadeth, Metallica - type of stuff so it shouldn't be _too_ vintage. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated  :)

i play a lot of that type of stuff, and i use a miracle man (which works very well for it), but i'm not sure how it'd work with the woods you have (not saying it won't work, just that i haven't tried it in alder), and it also may be a little hot/tight for van halen... there also may be another BKP which i haven't tried which would do what you want better.

that's probably not much help. I'll leave it to the experts.

cold sweat fore sure
it completely rips the shiteeeee out of the lawrence
sounds much thicker, warmer and sweeter
a LOT more mid crunch (the lawrence is completely scooped) without sacrificing the clarity that the lawrence has
the miracle man is a bit too bassy and powerful compared to both
not really a "replacement"
I love it too, but it's more modern metal sounding
very focused and punchy
the cold sweat sounds more organic and 80ish than both, imo
but if you really want something warmer and less heavy, then you could try the emerald or the vhII

Allright guys, thanks for the advice! Cold Sweat was what I though myself first too, when browsin through the products. I'm a little concerned though whetever it would sound a little too bright in a full alder guitar? What about the Holydiver, how does if differ from Cold Sweat?

the diver sounds a bit less hot, but way more full bodied, darker and more fluid
sounds really big, specially for leads
it has a thicker and more open midrange
I can't tell myself which one I prefer
for alder, I'd probably go with the diver, but I'm thinking I started to like the cold sweat better in mahogany
they have a very close output level, but they are very different from each other
the diver sounds really "alnico" (warm, fat, smooth, fluid, clear, open), while the cold sweat sounds very "ceramic" (tight, hot, sharp, bright, crunchy, aggressive)
