it's official, I can't sing!!!

I got to play rockband at the weekend, when it comes to singing I'm a tone deaf monkey

reading lyrics, singing and trying to be in tune all at the same time are too much for my brain to handle, on top of that my singing tone is awful, I think I need a tuner to tell how far I'm off

on the plus side the rockband guitar is so much nicer than the guitar hero one and I can actually use it! I'm not bad on drums either :)

Well, even musics that I could sing in tune, when I don't know the lyrics and need to read while singing, go to "no no" condition...
Memorize the lyrics and you'll see how much more easy it gets!

I dont even have the confidence and self esteem to even beginto try to sing, even if I'm by myself and 100% sure no one else can hear me :oops :lol: I cant talk and play guitar either, so it was just not meant to be.

exactly the same here. won't sing no matter what. when people are talking to me when playing guitar i try to talk to them but instead just stare at them and they wonder what the hell i'm doing.

I do this to my partner a number of times a week - it's like my brain won't let me do more than one thing at a time. I cannot sing either but can hum in tune. Makes no sense to me.

Singing is something that needs practice

I think that vocal chords needs exercising like the rst of your muscles to stay in condition
And pitching is something that needs practice too

In previous years we used to get a lot of opportunity to practice at school, church, concerts, football matches but we dont seem to have so many opportunities these days

I was reading a Graham Coxon interview lastw eek - he pretty much sauys the same thing i.e. his voice was weak when he started touring his own material. After a few months on the road his voice was much stronger and more in tune. The singer in my old ban also used to hum/sing along to different reference pitches - apparently this is good ear and voice training.

Though, me ma reckons that I can, and shes a singing teacher. Myahps I hold myself to too high a standard, or mayhaps shes just being nice.

I couldnt play and talk for years either. Then one day a mate asked me a quesiton when I was bashing a guitar, I answered, not thinking about playing or speaking, and did both fluently. Can do it any time now. Go figure.

I don't consider myself to have much of a voice but I sing about 50% of the songs in my band and do backing vox on many of the others. My voice has definately got better and stronger from use over the years and my range has got bigger. Obviously I am playing and singing at the same time but I originally did it whilst playing bass and that stood me in good stead. To me it is far harder to sing and play bass than it is to sing and play guitar and maybe it was learning to do so that helped me when I switched to guitar. I would suggest you find songs that you can just strum along to on the beat and then introduce the vocals.In the end your brain should be able to allow both to take place. It is unusual for a musician to be unable to at least hold a tune. It is just a case of getting used to using another instrument( i.e. the voice).

I've found sitting up straight makes a huge difference, I'm a lot more in tune now, humming along I managed 97% but singing properly the score drops but I usual mess up the lyrics when I don't know the song

my vocal tone is still rubbish, James Hetfield impressions don't seem to work well in rock band, for me anyway

I always sing while I'm driving my truck at work. I love it, but I wouldn't say I was good as Dean Martin.  :lol:

I didn't think I could sing. Got forced to join a few school choirs (because I do A Level Music), and sang Handel's Messiah in the Albert Hall last week. I sight read for 2 hours, having never heard any of the songs before, and after about 20 minutes, I noticed I was hitting practically every note just by reading the music.

Singing is strange, if you actually try, you might be surprised. :)
