a little advise
« on: November 24, 2008, 04:13:10 PM »
hello,
i have a custom explorer currently without a pickup, and I was thinking about a Burstbucker, (this guitar only has a bridge cavity by the way) because i had heard that burstbuckers are very versatile and can pull off alot of styles, personally i want this guitar most of all for classic rock, but I do metal sometimes so I dont want a pickup that will limit me that much

point is, do you guys think i should stick to the burstbucker, or is there a bare knuckle alternative to it thats even better

thanks for the help

I don't know anything about Explorers but can tell you that I owned a Burstbucker Pro and was not impressed with it, especially considering the price tag. I swapped a JB out for it and found it to have the same screechy and icey highs as the JB. The Burstbucker's cleans were slightly better but lacked definition on the low end. With overdrive/distortion added the bottom got really flat and the highs were very shrill.

I would say that a Mule or Riff Raff would both work really well. The Mule would have a bit more low end than the Riff Raff, the Riff Raff being brighter.

The Mule is so versatile it can be used for most anything. Perfect for classic rock and also seems to handle harder stuff pretty well.

The Riff Raff (IMO) seems more in its element with classic rock and blues. Also very versatile though. :)

The Burstbuckers in my last Les Paul came straight out, for the reasons above, to be replaced with Mules. I can imagine a BB in a relatively lightweight guitar like an Explorer would not be a pleasant experience!

you sound like exactly the kinda thing I'm after/into, and I've been told Riff Raffs, although as someone pointed out on another thread, Black Dog seems kinda more in the middle if you want vintage and the odd metal!? I really haven't tried enough BKs though to give a decent answer, sorry...

I tried a Black Dog, Nailbomb and Emeralds in my Explorer and the Em's were the nicest.  I'd also be interested in trying some Cold Sweats in my Explorer, I think they will work out for alot of styles.

fwiw, Tim recommended either a NB or VHII in my Explorer, however I didn't get on with the NB in the end.
