Colouring Danish Oil

Guys, is it OK to add dye to Danish Oil, to give a natural finish a bit of a tint?

If so, what's good to use, and in what ratio?  Or is it a sucj it and see sorta thing?

Timely question, I was thinking about something similar!  :D

I'm considering getting an unfinished neck and using Tru-Oil on it, but wasn't sure if it should be stained first then finished over the top, or if you should use tinted Tru-Oil (if such a thing exists).

I also read somewhere that you can spray nitro over a Tru-Oil finish (thinking of the headstock face here).  Is this true, it sounds a bit unlikely somehow...

yes and no, you can mix some spirit based stains with the oils but some will not mix and some will affect the drying time of the oil. 

i havnt tried enough to offer a definative answer, so yeah - try it and see

Yeah, that sounds sensible - presumably that's what Ernie Ball/Music Man do, although they spray the back of the head too.

From the Briwax website:

No, Briwax Danish Oil does not come in colours, but you can tint it with Briwax Spirit-based Wood Dye.  The resultant coloured oil does not have a long shelf life, and so it should be mixed and used within a few days.  The disadvantage of mixing the Wood Dyes with Oil is that you are committed to a specific colour.  If you apply the Wood Dye to your wood first, you can add more or different colours until you are happy with the colour, and then seal the colour with Oil afterwards.  If you apply tinted Danish Oil and don't like the finished colour, you will need to sand the finish off before you can re-colour the timber.

Could you not use a tinted Briwax wax over the Danish oil?  I've just waxed a Swamp Ash body over tru-oil, I used the plain wax but had the choice of different tints.  Wax over oil is very nice.

Got any pics Tom?  I'm thinking of putting together a Warmoth Tele and can't decide if I should get finished parts, or save a bit of money, get unfinished and oil/wax them.

The thing is, I've got the Danish Oil, and the wax.  The idea was that I could just spend a couple of quid on a dye that I could add to the oil.

MrBump, I think Touchstone tonewoods do something that you could use.  If that's the way to go I would just add a drop or so to some oil in a cup and build the colour up slowly.   Because you can use so many layers of oil, being so thin you can afford to just add a very small amount of dye and play it safe on the colour.
