The Cornford range is phenomenal indeed. The RK100 is one amp that people seem to overlook, but it's possibly the best sounding of the lot if you get a chance to crank it up. The MK50II is also incredible.
I'm (predictably) going to recommend Diezel too -  the Einstein could be just the ticket for you.

regarding Cornford, when I went to see Alter Bridge a couple of weeks ago they were supported by Hotleg which is Justin Hawkins new band. They were all using cornfords, there were about 1/2 dozen on stage, from what I could see a couple of MK50 and Hellcats. Honestly, I thought there sound was very poor, really toppy and the 2 guitarists sound just mushed together. I guess it could have been how they were set up or where I was stood but the Cornford mystique disappeared for me altogether.

I wonder if that's something to do with their 'compressed' tone?  When you crank them up, they've got nowhere to go?

The best amps (and pedals) I've found for live work are the more open sounding ones.  For home use and recording the compressed tone is good though.

Thanks for the comments guys - cornford is an interesting one - I might try that route and see where it gets me. I've had a carrera before but it didn't really do it for me but never tried the 50w or the hellcat.

Guthrie's lead tones are fantastic

Twinfan - thanks for the advice - listening back to the track it is quite gainy and I have tended to play with a bit of gain to smooth things out.

I'll have a look at the cornfords first then

+1 on the Diezel Einstein. Amazing clean sound, SRV crunch through to lots of gain all with a cool vintage slant.

I've tried the orange rockerverb before - I love the cleans/breakup tones but the high gain sounds were not really smooth enough.

I've just looked at the price of the MK50 head - good god!

Diezel is interesting - never tried any of those before - might have a go.

Suhr badger looks cool - maybe not quite the right tone though

hmmm, one of the lower priced Soldanos could also be a good bet ... HotRod 50+ is a killer amp !

Mesa Boogie Lonestar
Matchless DC30
Cornford Hurricane
THD BiValve

any of the above will nail those BIG warm tones you're searching for.

Ok guys I've done my deliberating and trie a few amps out. The lonestar special had a few nice tones but the crunch is not there so its Martamp time!

I'm going for a suitably tweaked JMP50  may as well join the gang of Martamp followers. Sadly it won't be orange like Sambo's though  8) ........at least I don't think so
