PAFs in an SG
« on: December 16, 2008, 05:28:55 PM »
Hi,

I'm looking to replace the stock 490 and 498 pickups in my in my Gibson SG, i find them too hot and lacking in highs/overly bassy.

I mostly play blues, 70s rock/prog and shred in the paul gilbert style (i believe he uses paf type pickups).

I was leaning toward a Riff Raff set or a Riff Raff bridge paired with a Stormie Monday neck.

Would these be suitable, or is there a better alternative?

Many thanks

Either of those will be great, and are the 'normal' SG options  :)

Great! Thanks for the reassurance.  :)

Twinfan, have you ever had the chance to compare the SM and RR neck pickups? If you (or anyone else) have had this opportunity what were you findings? Is there a great difference between the two or is it more subtle?

Thanks

you may need an overdrive or mid booster for gilbert style
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Stormy Monday neck plus mahogany = warm and sweet.

I've not got riff raffs but I imagine the neck would have a bit more bite and top compared to the SM.

I have had an AIV SM in an LP and I've got Riff Raffs in an SG.  The SM is quite sweet and rounded, and with an IV magnet quite clear.  The AII version is a bit softer and smoother I believe.

The Riff Raff is very clear, quite bright and a bit 'hard' sounding.  For example, it doesn't do the "smooth Slash thing" very well, but it balances with the bridge Riff Raff.

If you want a sweeter, singing neck then go for the SM.  If you want some more bite and clarity go with the RR  :)
