Need a reamp box
« on: December 11, 2008, 03:15:42 PM »
And to understand why I've been led to believe that I need one

Can I not just line an out off my sound card into an in on an amp/modeller dialed to modify the sound to what I wish with a mic infront of it or it lined in and the track its recording to muted in the DAW so it doesnt feed back?

After someone has explained why I'm being an idiot and this wont work or will be somehow woefully inferior, can anyone recommend a good reamp box? £50-ish would be nice, but whatever it takes to get 'good' (and why its good) is the budget really. Whats the cheapest Good one (capital G)?

Cheers folks

I'm thinking that a line out from your sound card to your amp won't be the right type of signal for an amps imput. I think the re-amp box turns the signal into the type that a guitars pickups create, hence the need for one. This is all off the top of my head after reading an interview with the metal producer that was in the thrash band Sabbat and Onslaught.

Edit his name is Andy Sneap, google his name you should find out more about re-amping there. I think you need one for doing ultra precise double ups. Or you could copy and paste what you have into another channel and set it in a different stereo position, but i don't know if that has the same effect. This recording lark is pretty involved eh!

Radial makes a few flavours of reamp.

If you want the 'official' reamp, go to www.reamp.com

I want one now after reading all about them! Great idea for putting the original take through all sorts of other amps and effects and mixing it all together in cubase or sonar ect

Feelin a bit like Peter Brady these days ... when it's time to change, it's time to rearrange who you are into what you want to be. PDT_008

Well, it was originally specifically to make a really cr@ppy recording of a clean tone better. Horrible plinky thin cr@p will become nice fat and glassy goodness.

But now I think about it, its such an awesome (if horribly overpriced) device - I can do all my tracks with a clean DI, mute it, save it and make it into whatever I please whenever I please. Need. Now.

Probably gonna get a radial X-Amp.

Probably gonna have to get used to calling TO DnL, now too!

How much are these things?

On that forum link someone was saying that my soundcard an Emu 1820 can do the job of a reamper but someone else disagreed. I can't see how it can so I still want one! Have a read of that thread, Mark, it really got me thinking of all these new possibilities!!

The clean di won't give you the same recorded signal as a reamper as far as my understanding of these things is, (not much). It will be a recorded signal directly from your pickups, not your amp. Route back to the amp and its a guitar signal played by your computer. I Think!!

When using a reamp box, i'd suggest recording a mic on the cab as well as the DI at beginning, then when you go onto the reamp stage, then you can blend the new mic/amp with the old mic'ed track... blending the same signal through different amps is great, it gives such a fat tone!

Another thing to point out, is that if done correctly (and using a high quality DI and reamp box), then there will be no discernable degrading of the sound, nor will it sound strange- it really is a great way you can use to get a perfect take, and then a perfect tone later :)
