fun in munich
« on: December 22, 2008, 12:06:50 PM »
took the missus away for a few days to munich, it been planned for some time, so it was really cr@p that the pound/euro exchange rate bombed making everything expensive :/ anyway, i had a chance to do some stuff i wanted to do as well, like drinking lots of the good german beer, eating lots of heavy (delicious) bavarian food and checking out the lovely german girls. heres a picture of fat gwem:

oh, and i went to MJ guitars, the guitar shop of mattias jabs from the scorpions. the proprietor was a typical munich capitalist. it seemed like for him everything had its price, and i don't like this attitude really, but nevertheless he was a friendly guy, and had some cool items in his shop. i tried (for the first time) a V2. it was exceptionally well setup, a great player and i really liked it. there was some bits wrong with it though (some plugged holes, missing a scratchplate, and the frets were dressed almost to the fingerboard), and in the end i decided to pass on it considering the price. it was a difficult decision but i'll be looking out for other V2s in the future. i tried it through the darker channel of a plexi and the boomerang pickups sounded quite nice - like minihumbuckers - not evilly bright as people say. the guy tried to put pressure on me - "rudolf schenker doesn't have a V2, and he was here in the shop and tried it. hes thinking about it, but i know him - he'll be back soon to buy it"... i found this hard to believe, i'm fairly sure one of the famous pictures of schenker and his Vs has a V2 in it. salesmen always try the same tricks, its laughable really.

they had a lot of Dommenget guitars in the shop. i must say they were amazingly well made, not to mention expensive. i asked the guy if Dommenget guitars were as good as people said "no.... they are better!" he replied ;)

single pickup mastercaster - really cool guitar

single pickup explorer, made from "old korina wood", i think the single pickup look works well here

Jabs explorer... considering the price i think i'd much rather ask Jabs fan Jonathan at Feline guitars to make me one ;)

they had other guitar makes - some vintage fender and gibson. also this caught my girlfriends eye:

the plexiglass roachcaster - its a real giant c--kroach which is cut into the acrylic. looks cooler in real life.

and some amps:

8 input marshall

jabs signature engl

i'd love to drop some more classic quotes from the proprietor, but i'll restrain myself. he was ultimately a friendly guy, and knew his stuff well.. but real salesman pressure for sure. not keen on that sort of thing at all.

just thought people would prefer pictures of the uber-boutique Dommengets... in retrospect i should definitely have taken pics of the V2. yeah, it is kind of odd/ugly/beautiful looking. i was surprised to see it wasn't string-through-body. i think the explorer-2 really works as a guitar shape though. they had one of those in denmark street last year, it was a really sexy looking instrument.

I was thinking V2 and for a few moments did a double take ( vergeltungswaffen) but I am glad to see it is guitar related and that you had a great time.

Nice pics, gwEm.  I couldn't see them in work, had to wait until I got home this evening.

I really like the V2 look (apart from that ridiculous little scratchplate they have).  It's very un-Gibson, reminds me of early '80s Arias more than anything else.  I think it's the hardware.

I have a soft spot for them because I used to admire them (and "The V") in music shops in the days when I was a student and only had one guitar.  Wouldn't really want to own one though, mainly due to the pickups.

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
