Problem with Volume pot failing.
« on: January 18, 2009, 07:29:58 PM »
Hey all.
just got an old guitar from my loft, a 6 year old les paul studio but its got a little problem.

i changed the pickup about a year after getting it (Seymore duncan 59), and shortly after the volume pot failed thats connected to the bridge... i took it to a local shop to fix and they put a epiphone branded volume pot on it and it worked perfect for a few months then it failed again.

this is a guitar i want to fix up and lend to a mate, and just wondered if there is any reason for this to happen twice?
and if so, what sort of volume pot i should buy to fix on to it?

the neck pickup is stock and never had a problem.
cheers.

Get a CTS pot. The Epiphone pots are not great at all.  The first time could have been because you overheated it when you were changing the pickup.  Before you solder the ground to the back, use a file or some emory paper to roughen it up so you don't need as much time to get the solder to stick.
So many pickups, so little time

I had a problem with a couple of CTS pots recently, the pot separated into 2 parts, i started noticing that the knob was moving around a lot more than just its normal motion of turning, also the tone of the pickup had gone terribly wrong (bkp nailbombs, started sounding thin with no sustain??) I opened up the cavity to see if it was just coming loose from the body or if there was some loose contacts and the whole back and shaft slid out of the surround bit that was attached to the body. then I noticed the tone pot was pretty much the same? maybe i just got a bad batch of pots.

hey all.

just rewired it into a different les paul, and starting to think it was a faulty pickup.
it worked perfect for about 30mins, then the volume went to about half.

meenwhile, i wired the stock pickup into the old les paul, and works fine.

so i dont think its a pot problem... sounds like a faulty pickup... i even trimmed a bit of wire off incase it was faulty wireing, and it dont make any difference if i wiggle the wire while strumming so i dont think its a loose connection...

might have to buy another bare knuckle pickup to replace it if it dont start working  :D
