Covered pickup ?
« on: December 19, 2008, 04:23:29 AM »
Hey guys are the covered BKP's typically a little wider than the open coil models? I bought an Ibby with an open coil CS in it that the seller offered to swap for a covered NB if I wanted. I asked him to put the NB in, but it was a little too wide and he would have to open the route up a bit to fit it. It is an RG2610 and the pickup is direct mounted rather than ring mounted. Has anyone had an issue like this? We both knew the route would be too shallow and the pole screws would have to be modified for clearance, but did not expect it not to fit width wise.

It's probably the corners rather than the width of the entire pickup.  The routs for direct mounted open coil pickups are fairly rounded at the corners but the covered pickups are much squarer.

Having swapped out covered pickups for uncovered ones, I can say with confidence that there isn't a noticable difference in overall dimensions....

The main problem is that the cover "flares" a little at the bottom edges so it's big enough to fit over the baseplate, which makes both the length and width of the pickup slightly greater than an uncovered one.

It's not usually a problem with ring-mounted pickups (although I did have to make the rout slightly bigger on my SG), but I guess they make the routing a bit tighter for direct-mounted pickups.
