a few questions about nuts.
« on: January 06, 2009, 11:53:33 AM »
Well i think i've upgraded everything on my agile other than the wiring and the nut

The wiring & pots etc has been covered many times so i have loads of reference for doing that.

But what about nuts??

What difference does it make tonally or playing wise if any?

What different options are they?

Would it be better to get a blank nut and file it myself?? (probably not in my case)

the main reason im asking these questions is the stock agile plastic one has gotten a bit of wear on it and i believe that every now and then that this is causing me intonation problems as well as having the odd string break a the nut.

Thanks in advance.
Tony

I've just fitted a Tusq one which is synthetic Ivory.  It has a nice ring in the open strings but It doesn't make much difference to me as I spend most of my time up at the business end of the guitar

Some information:
http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/necks/necks.cfm?fuseaction=stringnut

I would let the guitar to a professional instal the nut... Depending on the guitar it's not easy to get off the guitar and to adjust it correctly...

i hate plastic nuts.

i really like bone nuts.

Graphtech, tusq, delrin and all those other ones are alright.   Brass is ok on the right guitar... doesnt suit all.

If you have a guitar with a cheap plastic nut you will notice a difference with a proper bone one.

it takes quite a bit of work to get it right

I have recently made a couple of nuts myself from bone blanks and did not find it to hard. Like most things quite a bit of patience is needed and it can be annoying if you get it done then realise its wrong.

If the nut you have at the moment is the right heights etc, you have a ready made template to use and are half way there.

When I made mine I decided that buying files was not worth the money as a set does not come cheaply, instead I cut the slots with a very fine saw to just above the height I wanted then used the wound strings from my acoustic which were 1 size up from my usual electric gauge (11s) to widen the slots and sand down the last little bit, on the 2 lightest strings I used some folded some fine sand paper to fine the slots. I have done 4 nuts now the first I had to throw away as I got the slot angle wrong and rounded over the slot on the fret board side which would have messed up intonation, but the other 3 have been great.

If you have the time and like making stuff I would give it ago yourself at worst all you will 1 or 2 pounds buying the bone blank, you can always put the old nut back if it goes wrong till you can get a replacement or take it to a tech. If you get it right you have a bit of your own blood, sweat and soul helping you the music you want.

Thats a very good point i may just do that.

Thanks for the input

I'm pretty happy modifying an existing nut, but never made a new nut from scratch.  The thing that's always worried me is removing the old one and the mess it might make in the finish around the nut (I suppose it wouldn't matter if the guitar was already a bit bashed up).  I know they say to score around the nut with a sharp knife, but even then it isn't going to look too pretty if it leaves gaps.

Those who have replaced nuts - do you bother refinishing around the ends of the nut to match the original finish, or just leave it as it is?  I notice PRS seem to fit the nut after the finish, so it would be relatively easy to swap, I guess.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

i have always done the nuts on my guitars after the finish as it makes a lot more sense to me.  I basically use the same approach when replacing nuts nuless someone wants to pay the extra for the finish touch ups....

the old nut is removed by first scoring around it and then giving it a little tap from the fretboard side with a small block of wood and soft faced hammer.  The nut shelf is cleaned up and the new nut is made to fit right up to the edges and usually gets more attention than the original nut had anyway so looks very neat

On this topic I have a 7 string locking nut and I have a friend who is making me a tiny lil piece of metal to put under it (I have quite heigh strings and obviously the nut is lower than the other end). I hope the intonation once adjusted stays nice once I get it... hmmmmmm.

Might have to give it a try too, been thinking about changing nuts on my epi LP for ages, but neevr got around to doing anything about it, changed strings the other day and the nut came off, mangaed to slot it back in pretty tight but its not stuck in, so seems like the perfect time to try this, at least i know i wont screw anything up taking the old nut off
