Middle single coil options
« on: January 12, 2009, 11:50:08 PM »
I'm thinking about getting an HSS set for my mahogany Ibanez S540(read: extremely thin) that would consist of a Cold Sweat and two Irish tours.  My plan is to have the middle overwound so it would balance when I lower it into the body as far as I can.  Has anyone done this, or are there better options like a baseplate or using a Trilogy in the middle?  I only really use the middle in conjunction with the neck or bridge(coil-split) pickups.  How would a baseplate affect the 2 and 4 position sounds?

Next question is how well do Irish Tours cope with high gain?  I'm also contemplating getting two Trilogies and still have the middle overwound.  It all depends on how the Tours do with heavier tones and how well the Trilogies clean up.

Lastly, would it be possible to build a shorter pickup than what is normally made?  I haven't taken out the pickups on this guitar yet to see how low I can take them, but I'm assuming there isn't a lot of wood there to route and I wouldn't want to anyway.

I haven't talked to Tim yet since I'm not even close to ordering this set yet, but it's something I've been pondering for a while now.  That's all for now, thanks for reading! :D

Edit:  How did this end up in the Players section?   I'm an eeeediot!

i'm about to put a sultan SC in middle position in an S470... i'll try to put it a bit higher than you meant, though, to have "real" SC sounds
maybe i should't say this on a BKP forum, but you could try my previous solution... a lace hot gold pickup in the middle. it's low and COMPLETELY flat, as it's covered, so i don't hit it with the pick... pos 3 sucks... it sounds like a thin humbucker (that's why i bought the sultan), but 2 and 4 sound very very nice...
anyway i think this guitar (the most heavily modded of them) will undergo another pickup change in the future, to have an all-BKP set. or i'll sell it, maybe...

Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

That's the nicest looking 470 I've ever seen!  I have no experience with lace sensors, but the flat profile would work well and would look great with the all white theme I'm going for.  I'll keep that in mind, still thinking BKPs though.  Cheers!

Btw, thanks for the move DnL!

Bump. :drink:

Is it just me or is there kind of gap in the range between vintage and contemporary single coils?  The vintage hot are every so slightly hotter than the vintage while the humbucker range seems more filled out.
