Hi... New Strat Guy with Pickup Q!!!
« on: January 27, 2009, 01:05:49 PM »
Firstly... Hurrow!!!!  8)

My names Alex, been playing a fair old chunk of my life (im 24 now) and im into alsorts of stuff, my roots lie in a twisted mix of Punk and Blues and im also a massive indie fan but enough about that! Following an escapade to Australia i found myself guitarless in the UK as i sold my 2006 USA Strat to help fund my travels, now im settled back in the UK and bored of a borrowed acoustic a mate lent me i decided to once again get on the Guitar shopping with a view to play and re-join a band (i usually find myself in Punk/indie outfits, im no Steve Vai but thats not my scene i can hold my own with decent blues hackers and enjoy my indie/ska stuff) So as i ramble i hope you get the drift of my playing style?!
Well i was hunting around and failed to find anything that really sang to me so i thought why not build my own?! Well i had a concept to start with, i thought why not build an esquire, get a Tele blank out the neck pickup and bung something hot at the bridge... well i started looking around for parts when i stumbled on a strat neck that i fell in love with '77/'78 Maple with nice wear and tear just begging to be used so i cracked a deal on it and also found a late 70's hardtail body to stick it on complete with bridge and neckplate. The body has been routed during its life dor a bridge Humbucker and so i came to a decision to have a single humbucker hardtail with a volume pot and leave it at that, its not gonna please the vintage guys but i think it'll do shite hot for what i want to do with it, i love the feel of old guitars and this way i can modify the sound without bar-stewardising something original.
I moved on to thinking about pickups, firstly i thought i'd go down the SD Pearly Gates route but a mate of mine uses Bare Knuckles and they seem pretty bloody awesome, and being as im a southwest boy im thinking of keeping it local! So what would someone recommend??? I want a nice blues tone, ability to do the clean Ska stuff but also be able to wind the volume pot up and get pretty dirty for lead stuff and the odd palm muted riff (big ask maybe but what would you guys go for) I have a DiMarzio 500k pot lying around to use, then just need some Machineheads.

Looking forward to your opinions!!

Welcome.

I'm thinking vintage/vintage hot - that makes me think Mule or possibly VHII.

Take a look at the Crawler too.  It is more of a hot pickup but it can get the vintage tones.
So many pickups, so little time
