which 5881's for my Marshall?
« on: January 29, 2009, 07:01:15 PM »
I started to get wavering volume on my marshall yesterday, so its power tube replacement time.

What kinds of 5881's do you guys like?
I really want to keep it cheap because im a starving student and dont have much money to spread around. But at the same time, i wouldnt mind any minor improvements made. Basically, i'm staying away from tungsol and SED =c='s

currently i have mesa relabeled sovtek 5881/6L6WGC's in it. Which by the way are fantastically priced at 45$ a quad.

Not cheap as such, but very worth a mention - are the N.O.S Jan / Philips ( short bottle ) 6L6WGB I used in my  Laney head.   :)

I'm a big fan of the Tung-Sol 5881 reissues.

The original is practically the same as the JAN/Phillips 6L6WGB's.

The reissues are very affordable and will give you 90% of that tone.

They're very clear and lively sounding with a good pair of balls in the mids. Not dark or wooly or muddy like some regular 6L6's can be.

If you have the space for a full size / length 6L6, my favourite big, clear, 6L6 on steroids variant is the original 7581a . Definately not 'regular' ...  :)

why 5881? which amp is it? is it a JCM900?

considered converting it to EL34?

Genalex - Gold Lion KT66 will work in a 5881 amp btw and i've heard good things about these.

marshall 30th anniversary 6100lm. Kinda like a jcm900 slx with more channels.

And no i dont want to convert it to el34's. the LM apparently stands for lead mod, so its meant to take 5881 types.
I would upgrade it to kt66's, but this thing has 11 tubes in it (7 pre, 4 power) and i'm afraid im running just on the edge of the power transformer's capabilities.

If i had my way, this thing would be loaded with 6550's.
