Single Coils for Strat
« on: February 16, 2009, 11:04:17 PM »
I'm thinking of replacing the pickups in my US Strat, but I'm not sure where to start with the BKP Strat pickups (I'm more of a humbucker man).

I use the guitar for playing blues and lighter rock (think Matchbox 20), but the sound I'm really chasing is best shown on the following vids:

John Mayer - Slow Dancing in a Burning Room - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32GZ3suxRn4&feature=related - About 4.30, when the solo kicks in.
John Mayer - Good Love is on the Way - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9Nx6rzYBAc&feature=channel - all of it.
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Sh1P0earDU&feature=related

Any help on pointing me towards the right Bareknuckle set would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers,
Si

Well I would think my first suggestion would be a set of Slowhands would do well there. Nice rich warm woody Strat tone- having said that I reckon I could get pretty close (tone not the playing sadly) with my Apaches but equally I think those with the advantage of having Mothers Milks will be able to compare the Apaches and MMs- I suspect the latter would be a great bet. I have played a set on two occasions and they  also have a great warm Strat tone.
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance
BKP's: Apache, Country Boy, Slowhands.

My view is that with the exception of Slow Dancing in a Burning Room which is more an amp tone than a pickup tone you are talking Apaches rather than any other.  Don't let the AC30 and delay brightness of Apache by the Shads put you off the classic blues strat tone of the Apache pickups.
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

Cheers for the replies guys. I'll have to see if I can track down some clips of the Slowhands and the Apaches. I'll have to work hard to get around the Hank association though - my old man played the Shadows far too much when I was growing up!

I have Apaches in my Strat and I completely love them.  I play Hendrixy/Robin Trower mostly with some more Gilmour and Buddy Guy style shenanigans every now and again.  I find that the open sound of the Apaches gives me the maximum amount of headroom and dynamics from the pickup and means that I feel like I have more tone to shape with pedals/amp etc.  To me it's a very versatile pickup and very very far from just being a twangtastic Shadows pickup. My guitar has a maple fingerboard which will have some bearing on the tone and you should take that into account when making your choice.  I believe Mr. Tim Mills has Apaches in his Strat and he knows a thing or two. :)

There are lots of audio samples in the Players section of the forum by the way.  I found them invaluable when I was making my mind up about which pickups were right for me. Good luck.
