Pickups for my PRS Singlecut trem
« on: March 01, 2009, 04:04:06 PM »
Hi everybody! I'm going to replace the stock pickups on my PRS for something more suited for metal.

I have a Ibanez J-custom that I'm probably going to get Painkillers for at some point. It'll be the modern downtuned djenty (oops sorry) riff machine. For the PRS, I'm thinking of something a little more subtle. It needs to hold its own against the Ibanez output-wise at gigs, as I'll be switching between the two during the set.

For the bridge, I want good clarity, tight enough response, and I love my mids :) But, the vibe can be a bit more vintage than with the Ibanez. Bit more Opeth than Soilwork, if you will, but still suited for modern metal.

For the neck, fluid and thick solo sound, yes please! I'm going to fit the PRS with the Graphtech piezo system, so the clean sounds aren't _that_ important.

Tuning will be D standard / drop-C. My amp's an Engl Invader. And the basic PRS specs: mahogany body & neck with rosewood fingerboard and flamed maple top.

Nailbombs, Cold Sweats, ...? I'm open to suggestions. I'm even intrigued by MQs/Pig90s for the neck, but don't have experience with non-humbuckers, so shoot! Cheers :)

They will have a bit less output, but in my PRS SE Singlecut (which is similar to the SC Trem as it's got a thinner body and less meat than the full SC, too) I have a set of Rebel Yells and they are pretty awesome in it. Make it a great allrounder for all rock styles, and very nice mojo on cleans with the neck.

Painkillers, you say :) I thought about getting them for the Ibanez, but I guess they'd work a treat in the PRS as well. I'm just not sure whether they're as versatile as Nailbombs, for example... Thanks for the Rebel Yell suggestion hunter! They might be too much "rock" and not enough "metal" for my purposes though. Oh the choices! :)

Mailed Tim - and got an answer back in 8 minutes, on Sunday night. Wow :)

He suggested "Painkiller bridge and a Miracle Man neck-this will cover all the classic metal tones and modern metal tones" - wouldn't have thought about matching the PK with a MM, sounds interesting!
