should i sell...
« on: March 06, 2009, 07:21:44 PM »
...this guitar...

it is right handed. excuse the awkward photo.
its my gordon smith. serial 00156.
i think thats the date it was made inside. '79? although GS told me it was from the 80's, but then ive asked them before and they told me they didnt know what it was!
Anyway, its a double cut graduate that looks really similar to an old gordon smith Gemini.

its MILES better than any newer GS ive ever played... what do people think?

the options are...
1)keep it
2)get rid of it and save up for Feline
3)get rid of it and save them pennies!

I would keep it until you are absolutely certain what to do with it. I think the fact that you are asking the forum about it means you are not sure - personally I would keep it until I was sure!

I've gone through at least 3 similar phases with my 70s tele. Every now and then I'll want to sell it and then a few weeks later will be happy that I didn't!
I think I hate being indecisive.

i keep it because its actually an awesome guitar. i know a bunch of americans who played it when they toured and they loved it. used it over my les paul custom and my old les paul double cut (now gone to a new home)

i dont use is. the neck profile is wide and flat. and although i can play without trouble it just isnt that comfortable. so it sits not being used. i put those (weird looking) original pickups back in. its soooo much nicer than a new GS. im not really a collector of guitars. im thinking about getting down to what i need and sacking the rest off.

ive owned a bunch of amps and got rid of all those in the past year. VS100 valvestate, peavey 6505 (bias modded), JCM 900 dual reverb, JCM 800 2210.

now im down to the Dual Rec, the JCM 800 2205 and (when it arrives) the Soldano Avenger.

main problem is the other guitarist in my band uses my JCM 800. i also have a drum kit, and 2 4x12 1960A cabs.

my house is FULL! sorry. my shared house! haha.

if you like it that much, i'd keep it. second-hand values of GSs aren't that high, you might not get that much for it, anyway.

I like that guitar I'd keep it but then I'm a hoarder.

I guess if it was mine I'd make it a bit different to my others and keep it for occasional use. I mostly like rock / metal type sounds, so I'd put something like Mules or Stormy Mondays in it, and keep it for when I want to play mellow and chill out. Of course you may already have that base covered, but it's what I'd do.

dude. swapping the pups is a nightmare!

it had a 490R and 498T setup in it. i had the grind the feet of the base plates down to fit the holes in the body in the bottom of the pickup cavity! so stupid!

i just rewired our other guitarists GS, which is newer than mine, but we had the same problem, we were going to try a miracle man in it, but i didnt want to grind mine down (i dont have a grinder anyway) so i took the gibson pickups put of my GS and put them in his, so he can at least here his guitar with a modern-ish set of hot-ish Alnico V pickups.

it is a cool looking guitar, and its SOLID. it controls feedback naturally well, well it did with the 498T in it. its just the width of the neck. it can do metal man, with the right pups, easily!

maybe one day someone will take an interest. someone i wouldnt mind selling it to who i know will really appreciate it.

I'd sell it, if it you truly don't get on that well with the neck profile.  But then, I'm not a hoarder at all. I'm merciless at getting rid of anything that I'm not really using.
What's the point keeping a guitar that you don't really get on with ?

On the other hand, don't end up giving it away. But, unfortunately, I don't think it'll be worth a fortune. I'd guess that its worth little more that a good used modern Graduate. Anyone else have a better idea at the value ?

I suspect you could sweet talk Tim into making a pup set that would fit, I'm sure there would be a fee for custom work but if you want to keep it then it might be worthy of consideration.

I guess it's a fine line, if you like it and play it a little then keep it, if you like it but don't play it at all, then I guess look for someone who will get pleasure out of it. Don't give it away, people don't value freebies (some do I'm sure).
