Johnny Thunders p-90
« on: March 01, 2009, 04:58:38 PM »
Im looking to get a real Johnny Thunders tone out of my Lp special. Would I get the same feeling, dynamics and overall tone. Of a Mississippi queen drop in replacement as if I actually go for a dog ear P-90 and are these even what Im looking for?

Havent played a real P90, but the general opinion here and elsewhere is that the MQs DO give the true p90 tone, but i do have a MQ neck and its great!

Im just gonna have a bridge p 90. Oh and I dont like my bridge pickups with anything but a volume knob....how does that translate with the Mq?

You mean you unplug the tone knob like i just did? I guess some more treble, but then it would be a very little boost, could depend on what value the tone pots are, but i did not really notice anything. Check the players section, there are some clips :)

Despite what you may have heard, MQs ARE real P-90s, they're just in a humbucker case. I can't say much about the tone you're looking for, since I'm not familiar with it, but if you can, definitely get a tone knob with that queen. You're gonna need it for sure.

MQs aren't identical to P90s since a P90 won't fit in a humbucker casing (too wide from E to E), so the physical size of the coil winding will affect things.  I'm sure they sound great and are most likely very close to a P90, but they're not a normal P90 in a humbucker case.

In the BK world the are near as possible P-90's.  The guys grind down a P-90 former to fit in the HB size cover and then wind it just as a P-90.  The cover though acts as a Faraday box and cuts down some hum from the P-90.
So many pickups, so little time

I imagine they are, but they're not quite P90s therefore the tone will change.  Bet they still sound great though.

As a big Fan  I'll chip in, While he used a 50's Les Paul TV Live a lot -Although I have seen him live with a telecaster and a borrowed from Andy McCoy of Hanoi rocks Les Paul Custom which he also used during the recording of Que Sera Sera. A hot P90 and a Fender Twin fully cranked with the treble rolled back or a cranked mid 70's Marshall should do everything you need.
Absolutely no pedals just a P90(MQ will do as near as dammit) and a fully cranked amp.

I'm another big fan! Thanks for the trivia, I always thought his tone on Que Sera Sera was more humbuckerish in places & now I know why! Still unmistakeably JT though, hence the adage that it's the player not the pickup.

Around that time Johnny Thunders was great friends with The Ex Hanoi Rocks guys whom for my sins I'm also a big fan of (The originals anyway) I've had a talk with my Friend Carole who I used to go around the country to gigs with when I was a young sixteen (She still writes to and meets up with them to this day!) and she's confirmed I'm wrong it was Nasty Suicide's LP He borrowed not Andy McCoy's He also used a Trussart with HB's

Heh-heh, I love Hanoi too! Wish I could've seen them back then. If the gtr JT borrowed was Nasty's then it must've been that black late 70's Standard with the cream soapbars, which Nasty himself can be heard playing on "Short Lives"! Still reckon there's some HB on MIA, but JT's then manager claims Johnny didn't end up using the Trussard on the sessions, despite having insisted that he had to have it and making the manager go over to Paris to fetch it (this was pre-tunnel as well!)

Back on topic, I have a BKP91 on order for my Tokai LP Jr TV. The Duncan that's in there now already does a pretty good Thunders, but I'm finding out that BKP's are quite addictive (how appropriate)!
