Organic PUs for RG550
« on: March 03, 2009, 06:01:26 PM »
Hey guys,

I already own a Coldsweat 7 set for my RG 7-string which slays. Now I want to change the pickups of my RG550 (basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard).
I'm looking for something about as hot (can be a little less or more) as the CS but with a more organic alnico-like midrange in the bridge. I'd like a bit more growl. The low end should be tight but doesn't need to be ultra tight (like the CS) and the treble should be a bit warmer than the CS's.
In the neck I just want something that matches the bridge pu and can do clean tones as well as lead tones. I think the CS neck is really nice but I want to try different but not too different for that guitar.
I also consider changing the SC in the middle. I'd probably use it  for crystal clear clean tones and strat-like tones in the in-between positions with the neck or bridge pu split. It must be pretty powerful since I usually have the SC very far away from the strings so that it can't get in my way when picking. I'm thinking of the trilogy neck or bridge right now.
I really dig the newer Opeth tones if that helps.

I will ask Tim about it when the time has come to actually order the pickups. Right now I'm still saving up for it. Just want to hear some advise for the moment.

This is a very, very easy one.

Nailbomb

RG550 is whats used in the Nailbomb demo clip, and it definitely suits.

Though always ask Tim, see what he says, but i'm 100% sure he will suggest a NB

Not sure about the middle SC, i never use them so...

I agree. Definately nailbomb. Maybe Holy Diver as well.

Yeah, the Nailbomb definitely came to my mind, too. As well as the Holydiver and Rebel Yells. Right now I'm torn between the HD and the NB. The HD seems to have more low mids and a bit more growl (which is a good thing) but might not sound as big and open in the midrange as the NB.

And what do you think about the Blackdog? I know it's just "vintage hot" but I read that it was very tight for an A5 magnet and that it was hotter (about as hot as an Duncan JB) as you might think. Is it suited for basswood?

You described the Nailbomb spot on with the sound that you want to achieve so go for a Nailbomb Set!

Well, that's what I'm gonna do. Now my bank account has to agree with it. :)

Thanks everybody. After listening to a few clips, the NB should be a sure thing.
Can anybody say something about the middle sc? It should be powerful so that I can keep it out of my way when picking but still maintain a singlecoil vibe. It's only purpose would be strat-like clean sounds. Will Trilogies do the trick?

Hmm, the HSS Nailbomb set comes with two Irish Tours. I'd say get an IT middle, it'll be more organic, and obviously a tried and tested match with the Nailbomb if he sells it as part of his HSS set.
