peavey xxx
« on: March 15, 2009, 09:04:30 PM »
hey peavey price rises and all really bit me in the ass.... was guna buy a 6505... but their now 860 minimum.... the xxx is 800 ... just wondered if anyone here has tried one? ... what they like?
its for playing modern metal, machine head kinda stuff... is the distortion as "brutal" and full sounding as the 6505?
hows its cleans? i heard they were really good for a high gain amp that correct or harmonycentral misinformed again?
(obv. the 6505's cleans suck....so the cleans being nicer would be a plus) as would the versatility of the extra channel,,,,
can this amp pull off sounds like, lamb of god, arch enemy, children of bodom , machine head, metallica, trivium, bullet for my valentine as well as the 6505 tho?

(itul be going into a les paul menace probably loaded with miracle men.... XD )

cheers guys

from what i can remember, the xxx has nicer cleans, and has a bit of a "brighter" distortion- more 80s metal than modern metal. ton of gain, though, and i'm sure you could dial it in to sound a bit more modern.

most people seem to prefer the 6505 (and i guess i do too), but from my limited try-out of the xxx, there didn't seem to be much wrong with it. sounded a little sterile for lower gain overdrive, though.

thats the most crazy price increase EVER!

i used to have a 6505 but i swapped it for my mat black LTD, which at the time was a fair trade given the cost of each thing new.

the clean channel isnt very good, BUT i prefer the 6505 cleans to the 6505+ cleans. even though the + has an EQ for each channel, it just sounded worse to my ears.

anyway. I gave my 6505 an adjustable bias mod myself, and opened up the 6L6 idle current from 14mA to 36mA or something. that was a very low cost mod and made a nice improvement. but ive never played an XXX.

theres always the Bugera!  :?

i know its ridiculous.... i just dont understand how peavey think this is justifiable.......
really better cleans that the + u thought... thats interesting.....
i wont be doing any mods myself.... no way am i confident to do that to my investment...
and .... i really dont want to go with the bugera.... id rather pay the price for a reliable bit of equipment...
cheers guys

also you guys think of an alternative to the 6505 around the 700 mark that would do what i want??

what about a DSL 100? i know some dudes who play hi gain that use those.
Laney GH100L? not sure how they clean up. its single channel with a switchable gain stage i think. someone here will correct me. ive recorded with a GH100TI and that was a heavy amp!
The is the Marshall Kerry King Sig. that does hi gain and it has a noise gate. runs on a KT88 quad too.
im tempted to suggest a peavey valve king. i actually have a lot of time for that amp.

people here probably know much more about it than me
