Gibson quality control has always been real hit-or-miss, both in fit-and-finish and wood quality. Maybe this is because there seems to be more handcrafting going into one, I do not know.
But as far as I can tell, Gibsons have always been that way, even back in Elder Days when their guitars were handmade by elves. I have played some Gibsons from the 1950's that were nothing special, tone-wise, and I have played some mighty instruments that were made when Gibson was supposed to be turning out junk.
Gibson's guitars are hard to predict, but their best designs have been timeless.
Yeah, I get tired of the constant string of celebrity models and limited editions, and I wish that Gibson (and to a lesser extent, Fender) would focus on getting their details consistent and getting them right instead of making another Burger King Special Limited Edition Les Paul or whatever ('cause nothing says "rock and roll" like Burger King") but I don't buy those guitars.
