Pickup height Holydivers

To all HD users,

How did you adjust your pickups? Are they close to the strings or not?

I'm playing a Les Paul Custom.

My HDs (Alnico V) are pretty far away from the strings and the sound (especially from the bridge pickup) is more vintage hot/ bright, chimey and dry instead of thick, powerful and compressed...the neck pickup is set-up very low in relation to the strings (it's right below the pickup ring).

I'm really curious about the pickup height. The naturel tone of the pickups is much too 'dry' and vintage at this moment.

Take the bridge pickup, and raise it up till it's about 3mm from the strings with the last fret held down. Then tweak from there. For the neck I tend to just adjust it until the volume balances with the bridge. To me the bridge is a harder pickup to dial in, the neck tends to sound good regardless of the height.

i raise them even at 1mm from the strings and start playing long distorted notes... then i lower them until i get rid of unwanted overtones, but tend to play with high pickups!

Mine are approx 2mm from the strings in a PRS McCarty.

Why have you got them so low?????

I had my HD's low, LPC type construction. Mids felt too violent otherwise

I have mine fairly close to the treble strings. On the bass strings I started lower and brought it slowly up until that low end punch just came in. That's where I left it.

I then adjusted the neck pickup (a Cold Sweat - great match to the HD bridge BTW) to balance in volume with the bridge pickup.
