Suggestions on speakers for DSL50
« on: April 07, 2009, 06:25:06 PM »
Hello everybody!

I need your suggestions about a change in speakers!

I have a 1960A cab (with g12t75 speakers) which I use with a DSL50 (MM OT upgraded) and I’m considering changing the speakers. I have used in the past the vintage 30 (in fact I still have them in a framus 4x12 that I use with a TSL60) but I do not like the high mid spike they have (I use the amps in a bedroom environment mostly so take this in consideration) and the “upgrade” (in fact a change in cabs) to the g12t75 yield better results to my ears but still I think something lacking to my sound.

I mostly play classic rock and 80s hair metal (ozzy, dokken, scorpions, van halen etc) though various guitars such as Jackson randy rhoads, strat hss, les pauls, Ibanez, but my main weapon of choice is my HSS strat with a JB in the bridge. The DSL50 is used with a hotplate. Also I like a middy sound (my eq most of the time is something like bass and treble on 4 and mids on 6).

I’m thinking about 4 x g12h30 (I already have one g12h30 in my possession) or a mixture of 2 x g12h30 with 2 x g12m. I have tested the g12h30 with an eminence wizard in an engl 212 with the DSL50 and although the wizard not the exact replica of g12h30, I like the sound (and until this time it’s the only combination of speakers that I liked, the g12h30 with the v30 which is popular did not fit my sound requirements) it produces.

So the question is should I purchase 3 x g12h30 or 2 g12m and 1 g12h30 to use in combination? Which will fit the music style I play? Is it a good combo the greenback with the h30 anniversary? I know it will have a volume difference due to the sensitivity between the speakers in paper, is it much of a problem in real life applications?

Thank you all in advance!
Stelios

I find G12H30s can be quite harsh, so I would mix them with G12Ms........

Thank you for your answers!

yeah i think that i will mix them together in the marshall cab, two g12m on top and two g12h30 on bottom.

My only worry is the possibility that the g12m to be drawn by the more sensitive h30's but on the other hand, on my 212 which i currently have one g12h30 and a wizard (which is 3 db more sensitive), i can hear the h30 pretty well so i think i'll give the 12m/h30 combo a try!

Thanks again for your answers!

The difference should well be compensated by the location on top.

Anyways, if you dial in mids on a mix, you will still notice, even if it's 3dB less than the bass setting, they just mix well.

Yep, putting the G12Ms on top will help with the volume difference  :)

I think you'll only really find out whether you prefer all G12M's or a mix of G12H-30's and G12-M's by simply trying them out.
I have been messing around with all H's, and a mixture of M's and H's, for a while now, but have finally settled on a setup with all M's.   It's such a personal tone thing though, that I don't think one other person's preferences should influence your own.
Unfortunately, trying out a load of different speakers can get quite expensive.

Thank you for your aswers!

yeah i know i have to deside for myself thought trial and error... in my speaker collection i have already 6x v30, 1x g12h30, 1x eminence wizard, 1x classic lead 80, 4x g12t75 and a blue marvel (ok ok lets not count this one... :P ), so yeah... :D

Moreover as the easter holidays caught with me (i'm greek orthodox so it was a week later this year), i had the time to make some test and combinations and i'm using a combo of 2x v30 + 2x g12t75 in x pattern, which is good, better that each speaker on their own, but again i'm not 100% pleased, so the quest is still on... :P

One question for Hunter, on marshall forum someone told me about the g1265 heritage, which is presented as the "best" for 80s sound and i remembered that you used to have one or two and i thought i should ask your opinion on them in comparison to g12m/h on bedroom levels (which i mainly use) as i have nowhere to hear them live in greece.
