Ordered a MIDI interface
« on: April 25, 2009, 02:37:31 PM »
I ordered a Terratec Axon AX 100 MkII this morning to link up with the MIDI Ghost pickup in my Feline Lion  :D

I was going to do this months ago but was off work not earning for 8 weeks. So another 10 days waiting to go!  :D  :D  :D

Well I made some enquirys  about the big boss one at my local shop and it seems its a good un'. I was saying about the midi guitar and they said I've got to get this looper. The Axon has stereo audio outputs that will go directly into the looper.  8)  The mind boggles, I can record stereo audio with it and in the soundcard of my PC too or with midi. I may have to get some IV drips in my arm as I know I won't eat once this all turns up let alone go out! I was playing around with my Proteus sampler in Cubase this afternoon. I can load any sample into that and play it with the guitar, once the Axon arrives. So hopefully i can record some stuff from scratch. There are loads of professionally recorded samples of all kinds of things on the market now.
I know its been a while, this was all planned back in 2006!

I tried a Roland one at the LGS last year. I thought it was ok but this thing is in a different league.

I got the Ax100 MKII yesterday. Its really good and straightforward to use. It worked instantly I plugged it into my Feline Lions MIDI pickup with no messing about or Tourettes! It tracks very well and I haven't tweaked any of it yet. The sounds it comes with are pretty good, some are better than others but that isn't really what this is about. I linked it up to Cubase and assigned a software based sampler, Proteus X I think its called, to take care of the sounds. Its only a bundled bit of software I got with a MIDI keyboard a few years ago but it opens up 100's more sounds and Cubase writes notation as you play ect so there's tons of things you can do with it. There's a high quality software sampler on the market called Kontact 3 by Native Instruments which I've got my eye on which has incredible sounds and power. They do a whole package of stuff which includes their amp modellers but its pricey but would do anything you wanted. You can add real samples to it yourself that are now professionally recorded using real instruments rather than synthy simulations. So its all getting there, this home play it all studio. The PC is still able to cope with it as its a P4 3.2ghz, a gig of ram and 400gig of hard drive space.
I've been reading the manual for the AX100 since 6:00 am and its not too hard to get my head around. So a bit of luck.... no I better not have any expectations......I don't want to jinx it!

Johnny, Kontakt is just the interface Native Istruments, EastWest and other companies use between your PC and the sound samples stored on it for stand alone, VST, RTAS (et al) applications. It's called a 'soft synth'. I really like Kontakt and have found it to run quick and efficient.

Sounds like you got a killer piece of kit there. I'm envious!

Yes it does look good, it comes with a 1000 sounds which is good value.
I've been reading and playing with this thing all day, it is very clever. MIDI can be frustrating though as its in another language! The options seem infinite with this and a computer and that makes things a bit confusing.
The pickup in the guitar is brilliant and tracks really well.

Here's an youtube clip of the two things in use
