The Rebel Yells and Holy Divers sound nice. Right now I'm considering a Rebel Yell in the bridge (for, quite simply, a good rock tone) and a Holy Diver in the neck (for some beef). Does this sound about right? My main concern about this combination would be the outputs. How do you think they'd match up?
Thanks for all the input, guys :D

I may well be wrong, never having owned one, but I don't think the HD neck is particularly beefy.  It's the bridge pickup that's renowned for its bovine qualities.  I think the neck is relatively mild, probably no fatter than the RY neck.

You might be better off with a calibrated set.

+1
beefy neck = miracle man and warpig
all the other models aren't really FAT by themselves

you might want to consider one of the 24 3/4" conversion necks from warmoth or usa custom guitars to get it to sound more like a les paul, this would defintely take care of the string scale problem mentioned.  then again you probably love the neck on it, i know i would.

Yeah, but replacing the neck witha  short-scale version will have the effect of repositioning the harmonic nodes on the strings away from the pickups. Not sure how much of a difference it makes.

I'd start by playing with pickups, but if you really really want a more Lester sound, or getting a guitar with a 24.75" scale length (Kramer Nightswan, fer instance) and starting from there.

n.b. I am a Grade A Prime vintage guitar freak, but I have been lusting after a Nightswan for the longest time. Back when they were cheap pawnshop fodder I never picked one up, reasoning that they'd always be cheap now that the fad for hair metal has passed. (kicks self repeatedly)

Thanks, this has been massively helpful!

Looks like I'll probably end up with a War Pig or Pig 90 in the neck position then. You're damn right I'm not changing the neck to get any of that Les Paul thing; if you'd played one of these you'd understand :D

Thanks again!
