New Audio System Day
« on: May 19, 2009, 07:10:03 PM »
My old stereo set died a couple of months ago. i was forced to listen to CD's on the PA or on my PC. The DVD player with surround speakers wasn't all that either, certainly not when the sub blew.

Finally I was able to get myself a new set. It's a Philips MCD908.

It's a mini set that's a radio receiver, CD player and DVD player in one. Loads of possibillities I won't bore you with.

But wait for it.

The set might be small but the speakers have neodymium magnets and sit in a wooden cab, gold plated connectors and a 2X75W RMS class D digital amplifier loaded with two hi-fi preamp valves.

Yes you read that right, valves, tubes.

Great, big, natural, crystal clear tone.

It might not be good enough for the hardcore audiophiles but this is alot of tone from such a small package. It beats the shite out of my old Sherwood set.

That looks pretty good to me Ratty. Ideal for those nights in with a nice Kylie Minogue cd.

I got mine for 460.-  from an internet store wich is a whole lot less than what they're asking in regular stores.

I went to several regular stores. I said I could get one for 460 and offered the sales guys 500. They wouldn't take it. No wonder they're going out of business.

You don't have to buy at a regular store for service anymore either.  In most cases, stores take a faulty set back, send it to a repair shop and you'll get it back after three weeks. Those box shifters usually take a faulty set back and send you a new one within three days.

Its interesting to see supertweeters on speakers that small.

I am a fan of ribbon tweeters in general though.

Looks nice. I personally wouldnt catch a valve hifi if you threw it at me (except to sell it on), I dont want anything I listen to to colour the sound that much, even in hifi (as opposed to monitoring) but I know people that love it. Each to their own. Enjoy!

Philips has always been a respected tube product manufacturer. I always wondered why Philips didn't jump on the tube revival earlier.

I still have an old Philips tube radio. It needs a retube, it starts to fade out after a couple of minutes but it has a great clear tone and it's very loud for only 15 Watts with one little oval speaker.

They really put some effort in this little MCD908.

This sounds like you have no idea what you're talking about. Come to NY and I will show you the difference between mediocre solid state, mediocre valve, and reference versions of both.

Its a bit far to travel

I just know what I've heard when I've heard them. Thats all I ever go on (for any serious opinion at least) you should know that by now ;)

Looks very nice. I've mainly been making do with my 5.1 surround set.

But I recently bought some Ultrasone pro 750's. I listen to everything on them now. If i play xbox , guitar, TV, music, i put em on.

They are good.

But one day i will have a Hi-Fi Room!!

I have some pro750s.

They're pretty good. A bit laid back, not as detailed in the highs as one would expect, LOTS of bass, which is all very detailed and well extended and stuff but theres too much of it....all that said, they are great sounding. Superb soundstage, mids are beautifully seperated. The s-logic thing sort of works....barely. Good islotion. Damned comfy.
