Okay here we go....Recommend some pickups for an SG?
« on: October 23, 2005, 09:59:30 PM »
Hey everyone!

I have finally decided that i'm going to Order some BKP's from Canada.
First of all, i need to ask, what is caliberated and 50/52mm spacing mean? :?

And so...what pickups should i get? I play punk and some ska but mostly just something for lead playing. I'm puttin then in my SG. This guy on another forum told me to get Nailbombs...what do you guys think?

:)

EDIT: I might be getting a neck pickup too! Suggestions on that?

The Nailbombs are good powerful all rounders although they'd suit the  LP better I'd say - have a listen to the clips!

As for 52/50mm spacing, that's the string spread at the bridge, the distance from high E to low E, get the pickup that's the closest match.

Calibrated set means that you'll get a pair of pickups wound to give complementary tones and good  volume balance between neck and bridge positions.

The 50mm is usually Gibson and clones
The 52mm is usually Fender and their clones

I say usually because its not true in every case (some Fender designs have 50mm but that is usually odd shapes)

As HJM says - it's easily solve with a ruler or tape measure!

The new Holy Diver might be a good pickup for you.  Give a listen to the Riff Raff though, it would be good for punk and ska I think.
So many pickups, so little time

You could try a Mississippi Queen in the neck for that Iommi all the way to Frank Zappa P90 vibe!

When you say Punk and Ska what kinds of band do you mean?

If you go for Riff Raffs, be sure to tell Tim it's for an SG. Tim has a special wind for them.

There was a link some time ago on this forum to a band who played heavy overdriven ska with nailbombs. That sounded pretty cool.

okay I want a Mule actually for the neck since it's based around a PAF (i think) OR a Nailbomb. Any objections?

I'm not sure about the Riff Raff since it seems like a brighter lead pickups rather then for a neck

Hi, there! P90's have been used pretty much in punk music (Sex Pistols). The only ones I can think off right now are Green Day, and System of a Down-they have a raw, primal sound. Just a thought...
