Quote
pros
-Makes a convincing job of emulating most guitar amps.
-Loads of effects, some quite unusual.
-Comprehensive routing options.
-Includes a vast number of inspiring presets to tweak or edit as you see fit.

cons
-Expensive!
-No front-panel amp controls or headphone output.

summary
The Axe-FX Ultra sounds good and is an immensely versatile device, though it works out quite expensive and some players might find the user interface fiddly.

I wouldn't say 2k is expensive in context of what it does  :? the Eventide H800 is 6k!

Agreed, Lew. For what it does, at that quality point, it is not expensive.

I suspect it will be my next gear purchase although, for the life of me, I can't see how I'll fund it in the foreseeable future !

I'm at exactly the same place, maybe we should become MP's and claim for it.

Agree on the price being justified.

This unit has top notch components, immense processor power, unparalleled 0.8ms I/O latency, it has absolutely unique algorithms and approach to modelling and you get firmware updates with new features every other week.

There is a standard version if you wanna spend less.

Regarding the lack of front panel controls: It's true, tweaking can be a bit fiddly at places, but after a week or two you can go really quick and don't have to think anymore reaching any feature you require within a second. If this is not enough you can still use the editor, which has just been compeletely rewritten and rereleased.

Tweaker's Paradise - Player's nightmare.

I think it's an incredible piece of gear for the money. Just what you need for home recording. I'll get one when my funds allow it.

Why settle for a simulation when you're recording over an iso cab, replacement speaker, and mic?
